2005 Mercedes-Benz CL500 Coupe

Highlights

• Recent service
• Wonderful condition
• Low mileage for its age

The Background

Based upon the W220 generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the C215 era of CL coupés were introduced in 1998, designed to dominate the high-performance executive coupé market with their heady mix of high-displacement, high-horsepower engines, with numerous AMG models being offered.

The CL500 offers the smallest engine of the range, though that is relevant, given that there is still 5.0-litres of naturally aspirated V8-goodness underneath the bonnet.

One of the highlights of the car is the design, which features no B-pillar between the front and rear windows, which not only looks fantastic but also offers wonderful visibility for both the driver and passengers.

Technology also played a big part in the success of the C215, being the second car in the M-B stable to feature Distronic adaptive cruise control and the first car in the world to feature both low and high-beam Xenon HID headlights.

As standard, the CL family were equipped with active body control, which kept the car level in fast corners, as well as allowing altitude adjustment at the touch of a button to give the car increased ground clearance over rough terrain.

Post-2003 cars (such as this example we have here) also feature ‘Pre-safe’ safety systems, which can help prevent injury if a crash is detected, carrying out functions such as pre-tensioning seat belts, closing the sunroof automatically and even adjusting seat and headrest positions.

At the close of production during 2006, a total of 47,984 C215 models were produced, with 32,224 of those being CL500 coupés.

The History

This particular CL500 was purchased by the vendor during March 2021, being the fourth registered keeper of the vehicle since 2005.

Unfortunately, despite the car being wonderful fun and a great ‘weekend toy’ the vendor has decided the car simply does not get used enough, nor do they require such a high-powered vehicle, so they have decided that the car would be of better use to a Mercedes-Benz enthusiast or collector that will cherish and use the car as intended, rather than languishing for five days a week.

Of note is the relatively low mileage for its age, which appears to be genuine judging by MOT history records.

The car has also recently been serviced during April 2021, meaning there is no known work that needs carrying out before the new owner gets to enjoy the car.

The Paperwork

Included with the car is a full complement of OEM handbooks and manuals, numerous invoices, a stamped service record with a total of 11 recorded services, and other miscellaneous documentation.

The vendor - quite rightly - also wants to make a point that the history and condition of the vehicle show that it has been very well cared-for over the years, which is reflected in the paperwork present with this CL500.

The Interior

The cabin of this German Autobahn-stormer is in fabulous condition for its age, and presents very, very well throughout.

The leather seats are all in excellent condition, and certainly still have the appearance and quality of seats ten years their junior. There are, of course, some creases noted to the side and lower bolsters, though this is far less than usual on a car of this era, and, as far as we can see, there are no rips, tears, scuffs or stains to the material.

The carpets, too are in a similarly excellent condition, as is the headliner which shows no signs of any sagging.

Around the cabin, the wooden inlays and trim all seems to be in fine shape, with no noted patches of lacquer peel or missing trim.

Overall, the interior of this CL500 looks like a wonderful place to spent hours on end, and is an excellent example of the marque’s design. To the best of the vendors knowledge, and as far as we’ve been informed, there are no faults or issues with the interior and electronics, and no warning lights on the dashboard.

The Exterior

As with the cabin, the bodywork and paint on this executive coupé present wonderfully, with minimal signs of wear-and-tear.

All of the panel gaps look lovely and even to our eye, and there are no noted dents or creases. There is, however, a small patch of bubbling on the edge of the sunroof panel, along with small number of minor marks to the front end and exposed edges.

The wheels are all in presentable condition, though there are a few patches of kerb rash here-and-there, so we’d suggest a refurbishment should be on the cards for the new owner in order to bring the wheels in-line with the rest of the car.

The Mechanicals

Open up the bonnet, and the 5.0-litre V8 engine engulfs the engine bay with its bulk, giving a strong sign of just how powerful this CL500 really is.

As far as we can see, there are no visual issues with the engine, ancillaries or bay, all of which present in good - if used - condition, allowing scope for a detail-oriented owner to transform the engine bay with a few hours hard-work and a few detailing products.

According to the vendor, the car drives ‘very smoothly’ and despite its size is impressively easy to drive and park, thanks to its parking sensors and pillar less design giving excellent all-round visibility.

The most recent MOT exam took place on 13 January 2021, and resulted in a first-time pass with the following advisories:

  • Nearside rear tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing
  • Offside rear tyre slightly damaged/cracking or perishing
  • Nearside front upper suspension component pin or bush slightly worn
  • Engine vibration

The Appeal

Representing the pinnacle of automotive technology upon its launch, the C215 CL500 still looks excellent to this day, and remains a wonderfully well-equipped and powerful long-distance car for those who want comfort and performance.

In excellent aesthetic condition and benefitting from a recorded low mileage, this CL500 only requires minor attention as per the most recent MOT exam, but is ready to use and enjoy exactly as it currently sits.

If you’re looking for a long-distance GT car with some serious poke and style, then you can’t go far wrong with a C215 - happy bidding!

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 5-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

If your maximum bid is below the reserve price you'll bid that amount if you are the highest bidder.

If your maximum bid is above the reserve and you are the highest bidder - we will only auto-bid for you up to the reserve price.

Once the reserve has been met, C&C will make sure you are the highest bidder using the bidding increments stated below, keeping you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR up until just below your maximum bid when the increment value would have taken you higher than your maximum bid.

Once the reserve has been met C&C will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below, keeping you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR up to the next increment closest to your maximum bid if your maximum bid isn't enough for the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000 £100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000+ £500.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
