The MGA was a rare car, the Twin Cam version even rarer still. A hair over 2000 were built during what was one of Abingdon’s shortest production runs. Parts for the MGA are becoming increasingly hard to find, but parts for the Twin Cam - especially mechanical stuff - is getting near impossible to lay your hands on. Imagine our delight, then, when we were presented with the opportunity to offer you this fully-rebuilt 1,588cc Twin Cam engine.
Built as a spare for a now complete restoration, this unit has been built to MoWoG specifications, albeit with a slight change in that the valve seats have been hardened so as to allow for unleaded fuel. That’s the only change though, and we’re sure you’ll agree that it’ a welcome one.
Rebuilt with original parts, the engine has benefitted from a 5 thou cylinder head skim, new head gasket, the block deck was inspected and signed off, the valve seats were sorted as mentioned, NOS pistons were fitted, NOS piston rings, NOS thrust bearings, all new main and big end bearings and new tappet shims found their way into the engine, too. It has been built expertly, make no mistake. The company that has undertaken the work has a rich history in classic and performance car restoration and repair.
The water pump was also repaired, and has been fitted with modern seals that are better suited to the sort of antifreeze we use today. The engine has been built up to a point where, with the addition of the requisite ancillary equipment (ignition system, exhaust, fuel etc) it’s ready to run. It’s together, timed up and now just needs a new home.
If you’re restoring an MGA and you want to make it truly special, this is the engine you need. Maybe you want to do something different, and fit it into an MGB, or one of the many other cars with the B Series engine. Whatever your reasoning, the fact remains that this is not an opportunity that will present itself again any time soon. So get bidding. Miss it, as they say, and miss out.
