THE BACKGROUND

Recognised and loved the world over as a timeless motoring icon, the VW Beetle certainly deserves its place in motoring history. Let’s face it, its basic design and mechanical simplicity gained instant popular approval, with VW selling more than 21 million units over its 60 plus years production run, the final cars rolling off the production line in Mexico in 2003.

Full of character and charm, the final Classic 1600cc Beetles built in Mexico, offer all the benefits of owning and running VW’s most iconic car but with none of the drawbacks of the earlier models.

THE HISTORY

Imported straight to the UK from Mexico in 2001 to its first owner, this car has been enjoyed by only a handful of owners in the last 20 years who have only put 42,000 KMs on the clock.

The current owner has had the car for around 4 years and used it sparingly during that time, only having to do routine maintenance and servicing, although it has also had the brakes stripped and rebuilt.

Other than that, the car has behaved faultlessly and been great fun to own and drive, catching the eye of admirers throughout the country in its fabulous and striking red.

THE PAPERWORK

The V5 is present showing 4 previous owners and there are a few receipts for repairs and servicing done by present and previous keepers over the years.

The car comes with two keys and the current MOT expires in August 2022.  When checking its MOT history online, the recorded mileages should in fact be Kilometers as it has a KPH speedometer. There is obviously a completely erroneous reading taken and recorded in 2017 when somehow 104,062 is shown. This is obviously an anomaly and subsequent years record the actual numbers, albeit in KMs not miles!

THE INTERIOR

The black and red two-tone cloth seats give the interior a nice stylish and retro look and other than a small mark on the driver’s seat and a little sun-faded and minor wear on the rear seats, they are in nice condition, along with the headlining which is very clean and still nice and tight.

Carpets are a little worn in places and the dashboard and fascia are all good with no signs of any cracks and the door cards are also in fine condition.

The driver’s quarter-light window may need a new seal and the driver’s door seal has become a little ragged in one place though this is unlikely to need immediate replacement.

THE EXTERIOR

Overall, the original bright red paintwork really suits the look and lines of the VW Beetle and this example also benefits from being factory de-chromed with bumpers and light surrounds all being painted in the body colour. Its very low mileage is testament of how original it is and the overall condition of the car in turn supports the low mileage reading.

Around the base of the front windscreen and on the rear bumper there is the beginnings of some rust coming through the paintwork but otherwise the car looks solid and rot free from many of the usual rust issues. Underneath the car also looks clean and tidy.

There are however a few untreated stone chips to the front of the car, the windscreen and the bonnet and there are various small scratches here and there around the car, along with the odd rusted screw, but these are tiny and nothing of any major concern.

The H4 halogen headlights are clear and the bumpers all look straight and free from any dents or scrapes, and all four chromed wheels look in lovely condition with no scrapes or curb damage to be found. The seller tells us that some very minor damage was caused to the F/O/S wing earlier this year when it was scratched by a car (which drove off in a car park). It was professionally repaired and is not detectable.

THE MECHANICS

Under the bonnet you’ll find a nice looking 1600cc engine with everything looking as it should do, with no signs of any oil leaks.

The car has been well maintained and serviced. The brake calipers have been stripped but also some new brake piping installed as required - this was to free up the brakes which had become stiff due to little use. The brake pedal travel was improved, (although it is still more than a modern car) and the MOT subsequently passed with no advisories.

The car is fitted with a performance exhaust and included in the sale is the original system with catalytic converter and is in excellent solid condition.

The only minor issue the owner reports is the petrol sender unit, which is currently behaving erratically and probably needs replacing to provide accurate fuel readings on the fuel gauge.

About Max Bids

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.

Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

Anti-sniping

Car & Classic prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.

Auctions are extended by 3 minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

  • If your maximum bid is equal to or below the reserve price, your maximum bid will be applied in full if you are the highest bidder.
  • If you are the highest bidder and place a maximum bid above the reserve, we will automatically put in the reserve as your first bid.
    • Once the reserve has been met, Car & Classic will make sure you are the highest bidder using only the bidding increments stated below.
    • We will keep you in the lead up until your maximum bid OR the increment closest to your maximum bid, providing your maximum bid is enough to cover the increment value.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £9,999 £100.00
£10,000 to £49,999 £250.00
£50,000 to £99,999 £500.00
£100,000 + £1,000.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.

You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.

Pre-authorisation

We may hold a pre-authorisation charge on your card until the end of the auction when the hold will be cancelled. If you win, we'll take a security deposit which counts towards the payment for the vehicle and isn't any extra cost to you.

What are pre-bids?

A pre-bid means you're able to place a bid before the official start of the auction.
You will be notified whether or not you are the highest bidder when the auction starts.

Problem with your bid

Bids are contractually binding. To help protect you, we have some rules in place if we think it's been mistyped. Please check and amend what you have entered.
