RESERVE LOWERED - 1998 Porsche Carrera 3.4 Tiptronic

Guide Price: £9,000 - £12,000

The Background

Does a Porsche really need an introduction? If you’re in the market for one of the best handling, reasonably priced, RWD sports cars out there today then I’d be willing to bet you're already fully aware of what your looking at. Whilst some popular TV/Car personalities have been known to mock the designers at Porsche for not being very imaginative over the years with their design, generally in life a good rule is, if it’s not broken-don’t fix it and the classic silhouette of this car is instantly recognisable to anyone with petrol in their veins.

This particular example is the water-cooled 3.4 litre which means its lighter than the 3.6 and helps this car maintain its famous nimble handling characteristics whilst still packing a healthy punch of power delivered by 300 rampant German engineered horses to propel you around the twisties. With these cars now coming into prime second hand sports car territory, they make an ideal weekend toy or even reliable daily thanks to reliable German engineering.

The History

This particular example benefits from a comprehensive history. Clearly, each of its past owners have spared no expense in keeping on top of its maintenance. The car has wanted for nothing, as this very brief summary of history shows, all of which is backed up by a wealth of physical paperwork that will come with the car. All items in bold are service stamps.

The Paperwork

Unlike some vehicles, there is a stack of paperwork with this vehicle that documents its history as I’ve listed above, the current owner also has the cars previous MOT certificates, log book and user manuals.

The Interior

The interior is a lovely place to be, which is the standard to be expected from a premium brand like Porsche. There is some minor wear, the driver’s seat side bolster has some discolouration (please see the photos) but it is not ripped so could easily be re-dyed. This kind of wear is common on such figure hugging sports seats. In contrast, the rear seats look as if they have never been sat in. The rest of the interior shows some very minor general wear for a car of this age but overall is very tidy indeed. Everything works as it should including the electric retractable sunroof. Though the air-con works well it would benefit from a re-gas to make it as cold as possible. Two remote fob keys are also present and supplied with the car.

The Exterior

The exterior is very tidy and only displays a few minor blemishes to the artic silver paint work. Having covered 98K miles in its 22 years some minor wear/blemishes are to be expected. There is a chip to the paint on the front lower grill, two of the “twist” style alloy wheels have some very minor curb rash and one has a small 10 pence size patch of corrosion where presumably a stone has chipped the paint off and there has been some water ingress. Being fussy, the drivers side front and rear arches have some minor corrosion on the inner lips again probably due to stone-chips and subsequent water ingress. The bottom lower corners of the windscreen also have some marks (completely out of view when driving) where the black windscreen surround vinyl has started to lift from the glass, this is internal. All of these minor imperfections have been photographed for you to see, overall it is a very tidy car as you will see from the images.

The Mechanics

From the history you can see that the car has been meticulously maintained mechanically and this shows in how it drives. It sounds fantastic and does everything a Porsche Sports car should. Please see the history section for details of what mechanical work it has had. The owner says that if anything needs doing it would be a simple service. This was last done in September 2019 however the car has only covered approx 2k miles since, the current MOT runs out in October 2020.

The Appeal

The current owner has owned this car since January 2019 and has only covered miles on a weekend drive out. The car has performed well in his ownership and he tells me it’s a genuinely reluctant sale with another project needing investment meaning the Carrera needs to find a new home. As is evident from all of the history above, this particular Carrera is a very honest car that has been loved by all of its owners to date and the service history and meticulous maintenance supports this. Having spent time with the owner to document this vehicle is was very particular that all details of the car were listed, good or bad so that any potential buyer can fully appreciate the vehicles true condition.

The car would benefit from a few small cosmetic tweaks to make it absolutely mint but its more than tidy enough to leave as is if the new owner so wished.

If you're after a reliable German weekend toy that you can confidently throw around some B roads and look good whilst doing it, then tuck away in the garage until you next feel the need to let off some steam, this one has to be worth a look.

 About the max bid process

The max bid process allows you to bid without any hassle.
Enter your maximum bid and we will then bid on your behalf to ensure you're the highest bidder - just enough to keep you in the lead and only up until your maximum.

About Max Bids

C&C prevent auction snipers from bidding in the last seconds to win an auction.
Auctions are extended by 10-minutes if anyone bids within the last 2 minutes to allow other bidders to react and counter-bid.

Auto-bidding increments

If your bid is below the reserve price you'll bid that amount if you are the highest bidder.
If you are the highest bidder and place a bid above the reserve we will only go up to the reserve price.
Once the reserve has been met C&C will make sure you are the highest bidder using the bidding increments stated below, keeping you in the lead up until your maximum bid.

Bid Amount Increment
£0 to £10,000£100.00
£10,000 to £50,000 £250.00
£50,000+ £500.00

Automatically outbid immediately

When you place a max bid and are outbid immediately that means that another bidder has placed a max bid limit which is higher than yours.
You can bid again and we will use our automatic bid system to try and get you as the highest bidder.

Matching max bids

When there are two max bids of the same value, the one placed first remains the lead bidder.
