1963 AUSTIN A60 CAMBRIDGE - SO PRETTY, ENGINE REBUILD! For Sale

Here's my 1963 Austin A60 Cambridge bedecked in what is arguably the best colour combination of all A60s - and also a colour never used on the sister car, the Morris Oxford. She's in delightful order and drives beautifully having just undergone a complete engine rebuild. Indeed she is still being "run in."

These BMC Farinas, once such a common site, are difficult to acquire these days. Remaining Oxfords and Cambridges appear to have found good homes and it looks as though their owners are happy to hang onto them rather than re-circulate them in the classic car market place. This is a lovely example - now 55-years-old and showing only minor imperfections - and is thoroughly deserving of a new and loving home. She cruised through an MoT the other day, even though she no longer requires testing due to new legislation.

Her tan leather interior is in great nick also, and she's a little quirky too is this old girl. Before I list the work done by the previous owner, I'll just point out that he also fitted a new steering rack and an improved one at that. By that I mean from a much later BL model. So now she handles superbly as well as driving so well. I am guessing that it's something like an Austin Montego steering wheel (albeit with the original Cambridge centre boss!) and it's surprisingly light to handle. I am told that the steering column that came with the rack was built to accommodate a steering lock ignition barrel, which of course it would be. So now, while the original A60 ignition and switches remain in the centre of the dashboard, controls all work from the steering column ie: indicators, wipers etc. It's all been expertly fitted, believe me. A brake servo ensures that the car actually stops like a modern vehicle and the battery is now housed in the boot. So, a modern twist for an early 60s classic!

I know the previous owner and have bought classics from him in the past. The following is what he had to say about the Cambridge during his time of ownership:

"Whilst in my ownership I have carried out lots of work at great expense. The car now drives superb, better than new. It looks really well, solid underneath, body good. Front wings are steel and good, I think they have been replaced in the past. Most of the chrome work as been re-chromed."

Here's a list of work I have carried out:

Reconditioned engine (taken apart and rebuilt. Valves, rings, shells, the lot.) Now needs running in....

Cylinder head converted for unleaded...

Fitted fully reconditioned gearbox and clutch...

Fitted N. O. S Front shock absorbers..

New brakes all round..

New tyres...

N. O. S Radiator...

Front seats re-packed...

Clutch slave cylinder..

New water pump...

and much more...

81k miles

Stainless steel exhaust, Brake servo fitted, Oil filter conversion to screw on type

front and back bumper re-chromed, New head lining, New top quality carpets fitted,

Front and Rear seats good no rips...

Even electric clock works and keeps good time.

As said Reconditioned Engine only 2 weeks ago and has only done 20 miles so will need running in up to 500 miles approx...

Car also has alternator fitted and electronic ignition so, all in all, car has been brought up to a good level with no work required, unless you want to take it to concours level..

So that's what he had to say and, all in all, it's an excellent classic.

Should you opt to purchase a classic car from me - classic meaning that it will be the equivalent of a motoring antique - then you are accepting that the vehicle will have had faults in the past and that, inevitably, there will be more to deal with in the future. Almost certainly and unless stated otherwise, the vehicle will have undergone some degree of restoration work and, again, it is more than likely it will need more at some stage during its life. I am a one-man enthusiast who enjoys unearthing these old girls and finding new homes for them. Viewing is highly recommended and then you can form your opinion of an aged vehicle just as I will have already formed mine. Modern-day life practically dictates that the majority of classic vehicles - and it is certainly the case with mine - are sold via internet advertising and with the added bonus of digital photographs. Extra and specific photographs will also be available on request. Should you choose to buy without viewing in person then please don't tell me what you have found or what has transpired a month down the line. We all take our chances with these antiques on wheels. I love my Georgian dining table but I know it has had plenty of woodworm over the years. Had I wanted a new table, then maybe I should have gone to Oak Furniture Land.

I accept all major debit cards and can also assist with delivery and so please ask for a quote. Thanks for reading. Martin the details below).
