There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT. The perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices rising all of the time.
This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this price range. It’s had a great deal of work during its life, which I will detail throughout the ad. The car has an MOT until August 2018 and of course, with the new DVLA rules, the car is now both tax and MOT exempt.
This colour, Aqua, was only available for a very short time and there are very few cars left painted in this rare colour. The Heritage Certificate shows that the car was this colour from the factory, and it still retains its original (and correct!) interior. Such unmolested cars are getting very hard to find.
The car had a major restoration in the 1990s which consisted of complete body, structural and mechanical rebuilds. I have a great deal of history for the car which goes back to the mid 1980s, detailing much of this. This also points towards the fact that the mileage is genuine, as do the condition of the door cards, seat covers and headlining.
Work in the past few years includes:
· Reconditioned dashboard and new carpets, seat covers and foams
· Reconditioned cylinder head with new valves, hardened valve seats for unleaded fuel, skimming, new rockers and rocker shaft
· Bores de-glazed new oil control rings and new big end bearings
· New clutch and release bearing
· Replacement petrol tank and in-line filter
· Water pump, radiator, heater valve and thermostat
· 12v battery conversion
· New propshaft
· …and much more!
The above does not include all of the works completed at the time of its more major restoration – this included full front suspension rebuild, full braking system rebuild, new front wings and inner wings replaced, new doors, valence, front bumper, and much much more.
Structurally, the car appears to be nice and solid. The sills, castle rails, chassis legs and spring hangers all appear to be fine. You’re more than welcome to come and have a good prod around. Of course, as the car hasn’t been painted since the mid 1990s there are a few very minor imperfections but as you can see in the pictures, the car presents very well indeed. There’s nothing that needs desperately sorting out – and I’d much rather be buying a car that hadn’t just been painted – you’ve no idea what’s lurking beneath!
The wing-top seams are all in good order – the front and rear wings, along with door bottoms etc, remain really nice. Like I’ve said, it’s not a concourse car but it’s not the usual tarted-up junk either. The car is shod with 15” Minilite style wheels with polished rims, and these really set the car off well. Pirelli tyres are fitted all round, with good tread.
The car starts, runs and drives very nicely indeed. The carbs have just been rebuilt and rebalanced and the car ticks over smoothly, and pulls strongly. There are no overheating issues and oil pressure if just where it should be. Overdrive is fully functional and makes cruising a pleasure.
The brakes grab nicely and the car pulls up in a straight line, and the car rides very nicely (for an MGB!). It’s actually very quiet in the cockpit with no nasty rattles or a stupidly loud exhaust – it really is a pleasure to travel in!
The interior is very clean and tidy, also. It’s had new foams fitted, and the dash is in excellent condition, having been reconditioned in the correct crackle-black finish. A replacement carpet set has been fitted and is in excellent order order. The car retains its original steering wheel, and a Blaupunkt radio has been fitted and works well.
This is an excellent price for a fantastic car which attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. Obviously it’s not a concourse show car but it’s generally very good indeed, but is ready to use and enjoy. You’ll be able to see that for yourself when you come to view.
