Testing the Speedster alongside its Coupé sibling in 1956, Road & Track magazine declared, ‘A more comfortable sports car for long, high-speed journeys would be very hard to find and certainly no other car achieves the combination of comfort, performance and fuel economy of the Porsche Continental Speedster or Coupé.’
The 356 was the first production automobile to carry the Porsche badge, being conceived in 1948 by “Ferry” Porsche, son of the company’s founder.
Although it shared a number of features with its cousin, the VW Beetle, the 356 was specifically designed with speed in mind and so featured a completely new Porsche-designed chassis and 2-seater body, which was significantly lighter and more agile.
When these weight reductions were combined with the new Porsche’s uprated engine, the 356 delivered vastly improved performance compared to the Beetle.
Over 17 years of production, the 356 would be progressively uprated and four main series of car can be identified charting this evolution. The earliest, or Pre-A, models were built from 1950 to 1955. These were followed in 1956 by the 356A which ran to 1959 when the B series was introduced. The final C series saw out the last years of production from mid-1963 to 1965. Within these series a number of different body styles were available including the Cabriolet, the Coupe and the highly desirable Speedster, which was conceived in 1957 for the US market by Max Hoffman, Porsche’s American distributor.
Initially the cheapest model in the 356 line up, the Speedster quickly became one of the most coveted with its sleek and sporty styling. Fitted with a low windscreen, bucket seats, lightened body, special gearing, minimal weather equipment and a simplified dashboard inspired by the Porsche Spyder race cars, it was the model of choice for sports car enthusiasts in America and further afield. Overall the Speedster was built in rather modest numbers with just 3677 examples produced between 1955 and 1959.
Its combination of style, performance and value for money made the Speedster deservedly popular – 4,822 examples being constructed between 1954 and ’58 – and today this most handsome of the 356 variants enjoys iconic status.
ABOUT THIS SPECIFIC EXAMPLE
This charming 356 Speedster is presented in a black with a beige interior and beige carpets.
The Speedster has certainly been restored approximately 20 years ago and was since then from neighbors of us which we know for many years.
Unfortunately they didn’t use the Speedster very often but maintenance has always been important so the car was regularly inspected and checked.
The car is fitted with a period / series correct engine and was white when she was newly delivered.
Due to the risen value and the lack of time to use the car the current owner decided to sell the car after such a long time of ownership.
The exterior of the Porsche is acceptable. Not perfect but this cannot be expected for such a price.
On some parts one can find some rust. Not a lot but we would advise to give attention to the body.
The aluminium parts such as the surrounding of the window are all in a nice order.
The front window has a scratch and the wheels show rusty parts.
The carpets in the car are in a nice condition even as the dashboard. All buttons and gauges are present and in working order.
The leather on seats are slightly dried out and are turned on some places.
We would advise to insert a new interior as the costs are relatively low (approximately € 8.000,- at 1 of the best interior companies in Holland).
This price includes seats, door cards, carpets etc. etc.
So even a red interior which suits a black as well as white exterior color can be in installed.
We had the pleasure of driving the Speedster and we were mightily impressed by its performance. We found out that the engine is very torquey and responsive, and that the road holding, suspension, and steering were a true pleasure while the brakes, clutch, and gearbox all performed well.
Every car collector will tell you that a Porsche is so much more than just a car and falling in love with it is as easy as taking candy from a child.
The Porsche Speedster is an icon. Historically remarkable and highly sought after nowadays. The car is admired because of it’s design and driving capabilities which are both outstanding.
This car might be in need of somebody who accepts the car as is or somebody who like to invest money in the car. Both type of owners will enjoy the car as the purchase price is very attractive and it might be clear that it will stay one of the best-loved classic cars of all time.
