This is an incredibly special and highly desirable car. It never ceases to amaze me how much attention, admiration and respect it commands over and above the other exotica Iíve had in my collection over the years. In terms of sheer presence, it doesnít get any better than driving a black 80ís shark-nose BMW. This particular car has been shown alongside early pre-war classics and at modern BMW dealerships and always steals the show regardless.
I personally looked for this car for some 5-7 years on and off and here is why:
ēBlack with anthracite interior Ė you will notice with all BMWs of this era, 3, 5 and 7 series, that black is always the most sought-after colour. They appreciate the most, sell the fastest and truly do the era justice.
ē2.7 eta engine: This is my 6th E28 and by far the 525e is the silkiest smoothest six-cylinder BMW made Ė Not to mention the 2.7eta engine is bomb proof. Iíve had two with over 300,000 miles and they purred due to BMW mating them to high torque, low revving gear ratios which means they red-line at 4000 rpm and return nearly 40mpg!
ēOriginality: Genuine Alpina air dam (not fibre glass imitation). Genuine 1979 Italian Momo Alpina steering wheel worth a small fortune. Genuine BMW BBS alloys which have been stripped, re-diamond finished and lacquered (not painted) They are worth £1500 on their own.
Mechanically: She has a very low 102k miles and runs silky smooth and performs beautifully. I am a motoring journalist and modern cars donít change gears as well as the 525e. Silent and graceful at low speeds or plenty of torque and that beautiful raspy six-cylinder noise when driven sportingly. She is a genuine joy to drive and will always make you smile. Iíve driven this car all over the UK and she is faultlessly reliable. I have a folder of history including OLD MOTs but itís not comprehensive.
Bodily: Gleaming black paintwork and very original. Gorgeous gold Alpina decals.
Interior: Anthracite wool, electric windows. People marvel at how new the interior looks.
Electrically: Everything works as it should. I have fitted a modern sympathetic Bluetooth stereo to allow safe handsfree calling with red LEDs to match the 80ís period interior.
Bad bits: The sunroof is water tight, but the mechanism does need looking at to work properly and the sunroof skin has a couple of spots which have been rust treated and painted black but would benefit from being done properly. A handful of the cheap suspension bushes could do with replacing. They work fine but if the weather is nice they can occasionally get creaky.
