RARE VIRTUALLY IMMACULATE 1985 MERCEDES PHASE ONE W126 500 SEL AUTO with only 64k miles
Up for sale I have a very rare late model 1985 Mercedes Phase One W126 500 SEL, which has only covered a recorded 64k miles since the date of first registration and is in fantastic condition.
Starts, drives, smells and feels just like a true W126 should and unlike the more common stage 2 variants (86 - 91), this late phase one model carries most of it's predecessor's W116 retro period classic features, making them harder if not impossible now to find.
A truly magnificent time warp classic Mercedes Benz, that needs very little work, in order to make it totally show winning standard.
It is as described and offers unparalleled value for money to any Mercedes Enthusiast or private collector.
All questions will be answered asap
The paintwork is in good condition, with a couple of age related marks as you would expect, however it would be a shame to correct these as it is the factory paint and shows what an unmolested and original example this car is.
All of the panels, doors etc are completely factory straight, as to are all shut lines, bumpers, lights etc.
Critically, all of the chrome work is again pristine condition. All four wheels have the original phase one period feature wheel trims, which are in as new condition, and really set this vehicle apart from others on the market.
The underneath is totally original as the day it left the production line and has never been welded
A brand new front window screen has recently been fitted due to age and a small stone chip.
Unlike most SEL’s, this one does not suffer from rust around the rear window as I have had it fully repaired.
All of the deep leather sprung seating and door cards are completely unmarked (slight wear to drivers bolster as is very common with these cars) and all of the carpets again are remarkable condition. Both rear foot stools are present
The headlining is in perfect condition, none of the usual sagging problems at the rear.
All of the electrics work, side passenger mirror, sunroof, vanity mirrors, original Blaupunkt radio with retracting aerial, 4 x windows, puddle lights etc.
All of the instrument cluster panel is in full working order right down to the night courtesy lighting. A new radio antenna and fuel tank sensor have been fitted.
All four doors open and close with bank vault quality as they should and the central locking is again in full working order.
This car has benefitted from restoration under the parcel shelf, correcting rust underneath, which is extremely common on these cars.
Engine and drive
Starts instantly hot or cold, reaching around 1100 rpm on start up falling to 650 rpm once warm, exactly as it should do. The temperature holds at a constant 90 (new thermostat fitted) and the oil pressure holds constantly at 3 bar whist idling or driving
Made to be driven. This stage one variant is mainly minus the later stage two types with electric everything. The whole car has a different sense of driving and purpose.
Both exhaust manifold gaskets have been changed due to there age, at considerable cost.
Basically, this late phase one Mercedes W126 starts and drives exactly as it should, with no faults what so ever
There is no hesitation when putting the car into gear or pulling away. The car drives whisper quiet, with seamless gear changes as it should. A proper Mercedes from a era of unrivaled build quality and total retro feeling.
There is not a drop of oil anywhere on the outside of engine itself and the engine bay is in a very good overall condition.
Previous Keepers and Vehicle History
2 keepers up to July 1992
3rd keeper July 1992 to December 2015
4th keeper December 2015 to December 2017
It has been in my family since then, I bought it from a family member earlier this year because it is a lovely car which I couldn’t resist, however practicalities have set in and I do not have the space to store the car in a garage as it deserves, hence wanting it to go to a good home, where it can be enjoyed.
The car was originally sold by London Road Garage Romford LTD, where in early 1991 it was returned in a part exchange deal and kept by the garage as a show piece due the introduction of the all new W140 being launched
In July 1992 Mr Herbert went on to finally buy the vehicle after months of asking the garage to sell. He was to go on and use the car mainly for high days and holidays and covered under 10k in the 13 years before his death.
The Mercedes was then kept in store at the family home until 2010, when it was removed and kept by his Son, who in turn covered less than 150 miles in nearly 8 years mainly taking it for Mot and service
Full complete service history booklet up until 25/02/2000 @ 63381 miles. The vehicle was then put into store after the owner died for just over 7 years and brought back out of storage when his Son sold the family home in 2010.
The vehicle was then taken for Mot each year and put straight back into storage
Service booklet present with 11 service stamp entries up to 63381 miles using either Shell or Duckhams oil.
Valid until July 2019
As I said at the beginning of the listing, the car is ascending quickly in value as did the W116 4-5 years ago. This Model is getting rarer to find as there are fewer each year worthy of note left. The W116 is now very rarely seen on ebay for sale at all
Maintenance booklet is present
All Mot papers mentioned are present
I also have the original spare tyre from factory, which will be included with the car, although I have had the spare wheel refurbished.
The vehicle is situated in Birmingham for collection or viewing
