1966 Volkswagen Type 2 Samba ‘Split-Screen’ Microbus For Sale
As easily identifiable as the immortal ‘Beetle’, the Volkswagen Camper was conceived in the late 1940s by a Dutch Volkswagen agent called Ben Pon, who drew up plans for a van based on the Beetle floorplan and running gear.
It was named the VW Type 2 (Type 1 being the ‘Beetle’ itself) and almost immediately flourished into an incomprehensible variety of models catering for an enormous range of commercial and domestic activities.
The initial vans had a rear mounted 1,200cc air-cooled engine and four speed gearbox, the latter re-designed to cope with the van’s greater weight; however engines did grow in size and power as production progressed. After 1968 the split screen windshield was substituted with a wraparound ‘bay’ windshield. Yet, despite all coming with larger engines, the ‘Split-Screens’ remain the most desirable. Values over the past 20 years have rocketed, with many owners investing in very costly restorations and the buying public recognising the fun, style and practicality in such a classic.
The Sea Blue and White example, with 21 windows and split windshield, we are delighted to offer was USA delivered in 1966 to the USA in the colours it sits in today. It was still being used almost daily when it was imported into the UK from the USA in early 2014; it was put onto the market and sold that same summer by a VW Camper specialist in Bristol.
The new owner swiftly sent for the Van to be completely stripped and rebuilt from the ground up by Border VW, with the interior being restored by Bromsgrove Auto Trimmers. Original parts were used wherever possible and the van was re-sprayed in its original colourway of Sea Blue and White. The new owner also made the sensible decision of sourcing a brand new 1,600cc engine that Border VW fitted in 2016.
The whole rebuild and restoration took the best part of two years and cost £89,000 in total, and as you can imagine the van is presented in commensurately excellent condition.
Whether for the summer retreats with the family, trips with friends to Goodwood Revival or indeed to make the more routine everyday runs more stylish and fun – then this is the vehicle for you...let the adventures begin!
