This is my 1954 Austin Somerset
The car starts, runs and stops and everything works as it should. I have used it locally for the past year, but have bought another which means this one has to go.
As you can see from the pics, overall it is quite presentable. It has had a respray at some point which has been done fairly well although there are a few scuffs here and there as you would expect. The body work is good...the worst areas are the driver's side wing and the bottom of the boot lid (both pictured).
The underside is very good. These Somersets often start to rust away at the boot and passenger floors, but this is very solid. It has had the floors treated and painted before I bought it. The chassis is very good with no areas of concern.
All of the lights, horn and indicators work. It has working semaphore trafficators as well as later indicators. The instruments all work apart from the water temp, but another gauge has been fitted for this below. It has had an electric fan fitted.
When I bought the car, I had some issues with getting it to run correctly. It would run fine for a few minutes, but would die out under any strain, faster speed or hills. I believed this was the head gasket and fitted a new one. However the problem persisted. I swapped the carb needle with another I had lying around and this seems to have sorted it. However, it will need some fine tuning, as when you try and go past about 50mph it hesitates and you have to ease off the accelerator. That said, I have been using it to get to work, which involves the many steep hills found in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. It pulls well can be quite nippy with the bigger engine. It keeps a good temperature and has never overheated.
The steering could be improved as there is some play. It will need new tyres. The current ones are cross plys on the front and radials on the back. I would recommend getting cross plys all around as I have done this on other somersets and it has improved handling (and they are far cheaper).
The interior is in need of some improvement. It has jaguar front seats which done match the door cards or carpets. The back seat has had the leather taken off so will need to be replaced.
