“On the road, the Zagato eats up the long straights. Once moving its progress is magnificently effortless. Like most very fast cars, it’s as if it isn’t constrained by the physical laws of gravity and air resistance. Unlike most very fast cars, however, it fools its driver into thinking that its blistering, growling pace is normal, comfortable, undramatic.” – Motor.
Given the success of the coupé, a Zagato Volante convertible was not long coming and twelve months after the coupé’s debut, the first Volante appeared at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1987.
Aston Martin Limited took the decision to produce the car with the less powerful V585 fuel-injected 320bhp engine. Without the requirement of a bulky air box to clear the Vantage’s quartet of Webers, the Volante did not need the huge power bulge in the middle of the bonnet as per the coupe.
A total of just 37 were produced and only 6 in Vantage Zagato Volante specification.
The Vantage Zagato Volante utilised the V580X engine, producing a staggering 432BHP. Cosmetic changes included the power bulge in the bonnet plus and original lights and grille per the coupe version.
