There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT. The perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices rising all of the time.
This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this price range. It’s had a great deal of work during its life, which I will detail throughout the ad. The car has an MOT until June 2019, and of course, with the new DVLA rules, is now both tax and MOT exempt.
The previous owner had had the car for a good number of years. The car was professionally restored in the early 2000s by Cunliffe’s, the MG Specialist in Blackpool. From there, he concentrated on making it a reliable, mechanically sound car that was used regularly throughout the year. In more recent years the car has covered less and less mileage, in the end, doing under 300 miles per year.
The major restoration consisted of a full strip and rebuild – I have all of the bills and receipts for the work that was completed. This included:
· Full structural rebuild and respray with much new panelwork
· Replacement Ivor Searle engine and unleaded cylinder head, along with new clutch
· Reconditioned gearbox and overdrive unit
· New oil cooler, starter motor, alternator and other engine ancillaries
· New fuel tank, sender, pump and pipework
· Fully rebuilt suspension, brakes and steering
· Electronic ignition fitted
· Aftermarket electric fan fitted in addition to the standard fan – easily removable.
· …and much more!
I have a great big folder full of history for the car which dates back to the early 2000s. Along with comprehensive detail on the major restoration (bills for engine and bodywork etc), it also includes a great deal of the bills and receipts that have been spent on the car since, along with tax discs and MOT certificates.
Structurally, the car appears to be nice and solid. The sills, castle rails, chassis legs and spring hangers all appear to be fine – it wouldn’t have got through an MOT, otherwise! You’re more than welcome to come and have a good prod around.
The bodywork is nice and straight, and the paintwork has a good shine - it’s obviously got a few very minor imperfections here and there, as it hasn’t been painted for so long - so please don’t expect a concourse car! The wing-top seams are all nice and solid – the driver’s door bottom has a little bit of bubbling at the front corner that could be easily rectified, or just left as-is. There are a couple of very minor dinks here and there from being stored in the garage. I’m being very fussy, though – none of these stand out! Like I’ve said, it’s not a concourse car but it’s not the usual tarted-up junk either. Rather rare bolt-on chrome wire wheels are fitted, and are in reasonably good condition with only minor pitting. They could do with a good clean!
The car starts, runs and drives very nicely indeed. The carbs have just been rebuilt and rebalanced and the car ticks over smoothly, and pulls strongly. There are no overheating issues and oil pressure if just where it should be. The gearbox was reconditioned and is slick and quiet, and selects gears very nicely indeed. The overdrive is fully functional and makes cruising a pleasure. The brakes grab nicely and the car pulls up in a straight line, and the car rides very nicely (for an MGB!). It’s actually very quiet in the cockpit with no nasty rattles or a stupidly loud exhaust – it really is a pleasure to travel in!
The interior is very clean and tidy, also. Again, most of this looks to have been reconditioned or replaced at the time of restoration – so don’t expect a freshly trimmed interior. It’s had new seat covers and foams fitted, and the dash is in good. A replacement carpet set has been fitted and is still in good order, and comes complete with rubber floor mats. The headlining is the original but remains in good condition. Security-wise, the car has been fitted with an immobiliser (insurance approved) and includes all of the paperwork for this.
This is an excellent price for a fantastic car which attracts a great deal of attention wherever it goes. Obviously it’s not a concourse show car but it’s generally very good indeed, but is ready to use and enjoy. You’ll be able to see that for yourself when you come to view.
