The TR2 (abbreviation of Triumph Roadster 2) was a passenger car produced by the Triumph from 1953 to 1955 in 8,636 units.
The TR2 was designed to compete with the MG sports cars in North America and to replace the slightly powerful Triumph Roadster, which had become obsolete. For these reasons John Black, president of the Standard Motor Company, ie the owner of the Triumph group, decided to start the design of a new model. A prototype was then set up which was given the name of 20TS. This model had installed the short version of the Standard Eight chassis and was equipped with the 2 L displacement engine already mounted on the Standard Vanguard. This prototype was presented at the 1952 London Motor Show.
Black asked Ken Richardson to test the prototype. But after the negative impressions declared by the pilot, Black decided to redesign the 20TS thanks above all to the collaboration of Richardson. A year later the prototype evolution was ready, which was called TR2. The new car had larger dimensions, and was equipped with a renewed mechanics. The long refinement work of Richardson and the successful line made the debut (1953) welcome the new roadster with enthusiasm from the public, especially in America. The line, moreover, vaguely recalled that of the Jaguar XK120 cabriolet, while not missing its originality in the front (built-in mask) and in the side (with small doors, without handles). The first TR2 were characterized by the so-called narrow mouth and long door (small mouth, long door), that is, by the small recessed mask and the doors that extended up to the lower part of the rear wheel panel. Subsequently after the first 1000 units produced the so-called small mouth model was introduced, short door, ie always with the same small recessed mask, but with the shorter doors.
Belonging to the category of sports cars, the TR2 had installed an in-line four-cylinder engine of 1,991 cm³ of displacement and 90 hp of power. This engine was the updated and upgraded version of the analogue engine mounted on the Standard Vanguard . Power was supplied by two SU carburetors. The frame was separate. The independent front suspensions with coil springs, while the rear ones were spring and rigid axle. The wheels were available both with spokes and with full rims. The standard gearbox offered was four-speed manual; the overdrive on the highest gear was instead offered among the options . The brakes were Lockheed with a drum on the four wheels.
