Land Rover Series 1 (1957), Rare ex Civil Defence. SXF 596. Very Good Condition and low mileage.
It is with much regret that I have decided to sell my lovely Series 1 Land Rover due to running out of storage space (2 restorations under way).
This is a rare and unique Land Rover, having documented service in the Civil Defence from 15th May 1957 to 1970. It is in very good mechanical and body condition and comes with the originally issued green registration book. It has its original MOD service number stencilled under the bonnet and I have a comprehensive summary of its full history. The Land rover appears to have a genuine 75,000 miles on the clock, which may be explained by the fact that aside from the occasional CD exercise it would have been in storage for the first 13 years of its life.
During my ownership I have continued the gentle and sympathetic maintenance and improvement programme that this original Series 1 deserves. Its condition when I purchased it shows it has been well cared for during its life.
It has had a couple of recent comprehensive services, rebuilt the distributor and top end (exhaust valve sticking), replaced the wiring harness with a genuine cloth covered one, reinstalled original style copper heater pipes and engine temperature/ oil pressure gauges. I have fitted an authentic Fairey overdrive unit and new coil and starter solenoid. Also included is a hard top which currently is in pieces but I believe is complete and in good condition.
By separate negotiation I have a pair of original rear bench seats that I have restored and repainted and are ready to recover and install. Also I have also a perfectly working later series capstan –winch, which has been subject to restoration and with some slight modification could be installed in the front.
Overall, the work that I have done on the Landrover makes it both a reliable and relaxed driving vehicle without impacting on its authenticity. It drives really well and confidently covers both roads and open countryside.
The vehicle is well known to the Land Rover Series 1 club. It is documented in http://teeafit.co.uk/sxf/sxf596.htm.
