You might think it strange to find a Saab at a Mercedes specialist, but I admit to being a real Saab addict and enthusiast, and have a real soft spot for these characterful, and sometimes wacky cars; it's a nice change from the almost clinical nature of the Mercedes I specialise in. I've owned many Saabs over the years including a Classic 900 T16S Monte Carlo Convertible, a 900 T16S Ruby, a "Flat Nose" 9000 Carlsson, several 9000 & 9-5 Aeros . I've also owned more Convertible Saabs than I can remember; I think they're one of the few convertibles us blokes can drive with the roof down, and still retain some degree of respectability, not looking like we're having some kind of mid-life crisis! Also once you've had one, like Alfa Romeo's (my other automotive love along with Mercedes), you'll always be strangely compelled to want another, so when this little gem caught my eye back in June, The "Saab'er" part of my brain just couldn't resist it.
This rare low mileage example of Saab 9-3, was supplied new by Lytham Saab. It's also a "last of the line" "Design" special edition model that features two tone blue/black leather, extra body styling and multi-spoke wheels and a few other nice touches. The Design edition was launched in Model Year 2001 and was intended to mark the end of production of the first generation 9-3's, which I think were probably the last of "Saab designed Saabs", before the Swedes lost their influence, and the second generation 9-3 merely became a "Vauxhall Vectra in Swedish suit", the following year.
This car started of life as a lease car, registered to Lombard Vehicle Management, however I'm told it was bought by the Lessee in 2006, when the car was around four years old, so is essentially a one owner car. During all this time, this has been a garage kept vehicle, however due dwindling use in recent years, the owner, who also had a property management business, part exchanged his then little used Saab, against a van for his business, which is how it eventually found its way to me, through me hearing about it through a friend in the trade.
Although this is a very well maintained vehicle, as demonstrated by the comprehensive history, during the last few years, it's usage had dwindled from an occasional use vehicle to almost nothing, hence the low mileage....as I tell my Mercedes customers, it's simply impossible to have a low mileage car of this age, without some prolonged period(s) of inactivity, and its a situation I encounter often with many of the low mileage Mercedes I specialise in. So, as I do with them, I felt it prudent and necessary to go over the car with a fine tooth comb.
The preparation process, and jobs carried out are described below:
*Brakes all stripped & cleaned
*Two tyres replaced to match other tyres
*Both rear shock absorbers replaced
*Both rear springs replaced
*Rear brake pads replaced
*Handbrake cable replaced
*Key batteries replaced
*Mirror control switch replaced
*Cruise control (brake pedal) switch replaced.
*Wiring to boot repaired (electric boot release now working)
*Headlamp wipers fixed (weren't working)
*All badges replaced (old ones were faded, a Saab trait!)
*Wheel centre caps replaced (again faded)
*Various breather hoses/valves replaced
*Turbo By-pass (Dump) Valve replaced with a genuine new Saab part.
*Both SID & ACC displays repaired (due to missing pixels - common Saab problem)
*New exhaust (Cat Back)
*Full service (Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Spark Plugs etc)
*PDR (paint-less dent repair) removed any minor "parking dings"
*Replaced aerial mast
*Engine bay & car detailed
In addition to this, there was all sorts of minor jobs I attended to along the way (clips, bulbs etc) that are too numerous to list. The result of the above work now means the car is driving beautifully, there's something so addictive about turbo charged Saab's; it's that almost gut wrenching 30-70mph acceleration these cars are so famous for, and something you won't understand, if you haven't driven a turbocharged Saab before!.
The bodywork was one of the main areas that attracted me to this car, in that apart from the bumpers, both myself, and my bodywork man don't think it's ever had any paint, or body repairs for that matter, which is amazing on a car of this age. Obviously there are a the inevitable stone chips, but that's about it, especially as I had my dent man go round the car a few weeks ago and remove any supermarket car park "dings". The one thing that I will (and should) be asked is about here, is the propensity of the NG900 and early 9-3 to crack the bulkhead. This one, being a later model is fine, and the wise addition of a genuine Saab Strut/Bulkhead brace, should also prevent this happening in the future.
The Mohair hood is also good, and original too. There's no leaks, or rips and the rear window is thankfully a proper glass, heated window. The mechanism also works perfectly and swiftly too. The inner hood head lining is in good condition, however like most 9-3's is "slightly rippled" almost like it wants ironing. That said there's no rips, tears etc.
Service history is excellent, and is a mix of Saab main dealers, independents and specialist. There's seven stamps in the service book, but moreover there's a A4 lever arch file of bills, invoices etc documenting the vehicle's 16 year life.
So in summary, a rare low mileage, well looked after Saab Convertible, that's had essentially one owner, and one I've really enjoyed having, especially during the fantastic summer we've just had. Its also an extremely original example, and a special edition model at that, and I very much doubt there's many out there with such a low genuine mileage too.

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
Any other questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or on 07976 280738. I'm a firstly and foremostly a true car enthusiast of many, many years, and a Mercedes Club Member, so it's a pleasure to meet and speak to like-minded people.
Finally, I'm situated in Keighley, West Yorkshire (Postal Code Area BD21) which is approximately 11 miles from Skipton, and 20 miles West of Leeds.
