So the time has come to sell my awesome little Avenger, I’ve owned her since Dec 2016 spending many hours rebuilding her to a roadworthy state but as I’m always hankering after a project the time’s come to move on and start something new.
Back at the end of 2016 I was looking for a reasonably solid 60s/70s ‘three-box-saloon’ project to restore and what with the exorbitant cost of old Ford Escorts and Cortinas I started looking further afield… Setting my heart on a Rootes group Avenger, with the American muscle influenced styling and ‘advanced’ live axle, semi-trailing link, suspension set up, making the fords look prehistoric in comparison! Just by chance a colleague knew of a Belgian exported one-owner Avenger that had been dry stored for the last 15 years, I was put in touch with the original owners neighbours who’d stored the car, collected up a hoard of spare parts with an aim of getting it back on the road but never got going with the project or registered it in their name. So a deal was struck and I brought said old girl back home to Warwickshire, literally back home in this instance as I live within 15 miles of the Ryton assembly plant she was originally exported from in 1976!
In the Spring of 2017 I started the major strip down, repair, replace, rebuild operation on the old girl. Taking the next 9 months to bring her back to a roadworthy state where she was awarded UK plates and her first and only UK MOT, obviously now being MOT & Tax free! She’s a solid, honest, but not perfect example of series1 Avenger and comes with a raft of spares including a windscreen, decklid and propshafts! I’ve tried to list all the work completed on her below, she was reasonably solid starting point but having not turned a wheel in 15 years, most running gear was stripped, repaired, replaced and rebuilt just in case.
I’m looking for £2500 ono. She’s garaged up rear Rugby, Warwickshire.

Engine stripped, Cylinder head removed, valves decoked and lapped
Cylinder head replaced with New head-gasket & Rocker cover Gasket
Rocker cover cleaned repaired and repainted
Exhaust removed, repaired, repainted and replaced with new hangers & gaskets
Radiator replaced with 2nd hand item, rebuilt with new hoses as required
New Thermostat 82c QTH100 & Thermostat Housing Casting & Gasket
Seized Choke cable replaced with locking version
Heater matrix bypassed for a tidier engine bay (hoses provided to refit)
Engine Oil 15w-40 replaced & Filter Change, New spark plugs & Fan Belt
Strip, clean and rebuilt Stromberg Carburettor with New Gaskets and Diaphragm
Strip, clean and rebuilt Lucas Distributor with New Points and Condenser
Valve clearances adjusted, Timing set, Carb Mixture etc
New 44AH Battery fitted with New cables
Localised Body repairs to both Sills, Front Valance, Rear Arches, and Floor Pan
Repaint new metal with etch primer and POR-15 as a base layer.
Body Underseal renewed on complete floorpan, wings and arches
Engine bay foam degreased and locally repainted
Windscreen seal replaced with front and rear bright-finishers
Repaint body repairs with 1976 only 'PVR - Copper Beech Metallic' Paint
Repaint Front Valence and Rear Lower Tailgate section in Satin Black
'Tiger' inspired 3 pinstripes painted to body-sides
Refit Front 'cut' bumpers and Rear bumper with repaired and repainted irons
Refit Front Grill, Bonnet and Tailgate badges
Rostyle wheels cleaned up and repainted with POR-15 hand painted black highlights
Vehicle UK registered, Number-plates pressed and fitted
Remove all Front & Rear suspension & Brake components
Strip, bead-blast, repaint with POR-15 all suspension links & uprights
Suspension springs replaced with 25mm shortened Springs Front & Rear
Rebuild Front suspension with NOS Monroe Front Shocks, Track Rod Ends and New bushes
Rebuild Rear suspension with NOS Gabriel Rear shocks & Lower Trailing Arm bushes
Rebuild Front Antiroll bar with New drop-links, stainless top-hats & Full Polybush set
Strip, bead-blast, repaint with POR-15 Calipers, Drums & Disks
Rebuild Front brake calipers with new pads, hard & flexi-lines and bleed nipples
Rebuild Rear brake drums with new shoes, cylinders, hard lines and bleed nipples
Brake reservoir stripped, cleaned and rebuilt with New gaskets, Brake fluid replaced
Strip interior, Seats, Door Cards, Dash, Console & Carpet
Deseize all window regulator mechanisms
Repair & clean original carpet set & Add footwell mats
Clean, Vinyl treat, relacquer, all interior trim components
Binnacle dials removed, repaired, NOS Smiths Tachometer sourced and fitted
Dash Top retrimmed in grey alcantara (would benefit from a professional retrim)
Parcel shelf vinyl wrapped, local repairs made to headlining (benefit from a retrim)
New Lucas 12v 50W flasher unit sourced and fitted
Dolomite Steering Wheel modified to fit with new boss (Original refitted for sale)
Rear static seatbelts installed
Nice, restored Hillman Minx
Rare Left Hand Drive
Black with very nice brown fabric interior
Paint not perfect, has some defects
Recently replaced/installed: Electronic ignition module, Ignition wires, coil, spark plugs, brake pads, grinded brake drums
Cleaned and treated fuel .....
CRACKING LITTLE RED IMP, SHOWING JUST UNDER 55,000 MILES BELIEVED TO BE GENUINE DRIVES REALLY WELL , WELL LOOKED AFTER CAR WITH LOTS OF HISTORY TO BACK UP THE MILEAGE.
NOT EASY TO FIND GOOD SOLID IMPS NOW AS NICE AS THIS.

34000 miles and remained in one family for 34 years. Car is immaculate in and out and drives superbly. Car is always kept in dry storage and never out in the rain.
