This is a very special car indeed, however some would think its maybe somewhat out of place at a Mercedes Specialists, so let me explain how it came to be with me and my motivation for buying this car in the first place. As previously mentioned, this car was owned by the same gentleman for almost 27 years, however on his passing, the car was sold to his gardener, as he'd previously expressed an interest in it. Now in my experience, it's usually at this point, that cosseted cars like this can fall into the wrong hands, and as a result deteriote, however as a stroke luck, an enthusiast friend of mine, who I've bought several cars from over the years, spotted it while visiting a friend, and was blown away by it's condition, which subsequently resulted him in buying it. Having bought several of his cars over the years, I've always said he has a strange knack of spotting exceptional cars. This was probably one of the best examples he's ever turned up; looking back, it's so fortunate he bought the vehicle, as it really couldn't have fallen into hands of a more sympathetic owner. On discovering what he'd bought it, I have to admit I somewhat pestered him to sell it to me, and even asked if he didn't want to sell it just now, would he leave me it in his will!. Thankfully I didn't have to wait until his demise, and I bought the car in March this year, after he'd taken an "unhealthy" shine to a Lancia, and needed the garage space to house it. Since then he's regretted selling it, while I've absolutely loved having it about me; taking it for the odd nostalgic run out on nice days, its one of those cars that just make you smile as you drive along. My only regret is that as much as I would have loved to, due to time constraints, I haven't taken the car to any shows, however I'm confident if I had, this car is a sure fire prize winner.
So as to my motivation for buying it; apart from just liking cars in general, especially ones that are a bit different, as with any classic car buyer, my primary reason notwithstanding it's condition, was simple good old fashioned nostalgia; I have a real soft spot for the Peugeot 309, having owned two of them back in the 90's, one was a 1990 309 1.3 Style, the other a 1992 309 1.9D, both of which I have extremely fond memories of, especially the 1.3 Style in which I completed two lengthy trips around France; that car was an absolute joy, proving to be ultra reliable, comfortable and very economical. I do also have to add here, that out of all the many cars I've owned over the years; cars which have included Porsche 911's, a plethora of Mercedes and BMW's and various Alfa-Romeos and Saabs, the Peugeot 309 was the car I kept for the longest period of time, a record just broken this year after 24 years by our Trusty family Mercedes W169 A170.
Now before you read on, forget any preconceptions you might have to how you think this car might be comparing it to others on the market, because this isn't just any old Peugeot, and I firmly believe this is probably one, and quite possibly "the" best Peugeot 309's currently in existence. I'm sure I will be asked if its as good in real life as it is on the pictures, well the answer is a big resounding yes, but better, and what's more, it's as good underneath as it is on top, even the suspension beam still has the factory labels on it. Moreover what's more incredible is that this IS NOT a restored vehicle, but an incredibly well preserved original example (it even has its original windscreen with the starting instructions label on it), and one that comes with the most detailed and comprehensive provenance I have ever seen in all the years I've been involved with classic cars.
It was bought new from Bower's, Harpenden on 5th August 1989 (a time when Peugeot made good, strong reliable cars) for the sum of £7695, it stayed in the custody of the very same owner, until his death in early 2017. He'd bought the car as a retirement present to himself, and contained in the extensive file is a copy of a letter he'd written to Peugeot UK in 1999, telling them, after a decade of ownership, how delighted he was with the car, and also that he intended keeping this car for the rest of his life…. which he clearly did.
What's more impressive is during his entire ownership, he'd kept a highly detailed record of everything (and I mean absolutely everything) that he ever spent on this car. As you can imagine, for any self respecting petrol head, this makes for absolutely fascinating reading, and gives a real insight into the incredible level of care this car has enjoyed. For me, the most interesting part of the costs analysis, is that he'd religiously carried out is a running total of every drop of fuel he'd ever used, and the corresponding mileages. This particular analysis concludes that throughout his 27 year tenure, the car averaged a very respectable 33.93 mpg. Moreover as well as this incredible log, every single bill, invoice and MOT certificate is contained in an extremely large A4 file which house 300+ documents. Naturally the glove box service book pack is all present and correct, with an impressive number stamps in service booklet. Finally all original keys and remotes are present too; it really doesn't get much better.
The condition of the car is incredible by anyone's standards, and even though I've enjoyed this car myself, I still can't believe how well preserved it is; it looks more like a 2-3 year old vehicle, rather than one that's almost 30 year old! . Mechanically, it's perfect too; this is a Peugeot built before the days of silly electronics and is just good old fashioned, robust "belt and braces" engineering, that has been incredibly well looked after. Any one who knows these cars will tell you the PSA, Simca derived G1A OHV engine is prone to developing "tappy" tappets as the mileage increases if neglected; not this one, its quiet as a mouse which is obviously a direct result of the religious maintenance and very regular oil changes this car has enjoyed throughout its life. Everything the car has works exactly as it should, including the ingenious vacuum operated sunroof, which is also leak free. Even the Gemmel Alarm works as it should too, and operates the central locking…very cutting edge in 1989!
So there you have it, a very rare, incredibly well preserved original example of a once ubiquitous car. Do I wish it was a 309GTI?, well the answer in monetary terms is obviously yes, as a 309 GTI in this condition, with this level of provenance and at this mileage would be worth £10-15K, possibly more, but on further more humble reflection, probably not in some ways actually, as the fact that it's a GLX model makes it somewhat rarer. However, I do have to say, the main reservation I have offering this car for sale, is that someone may consider buying it to strip it, and use her rust free shell, to re-shell an average 309 GTI. This for any purist like me would be tantamount to sacrilege, and incredibly disrespectful to the late owner of the car, who's level or care has made it possible for other enthusiasts to enjoy it. With that in mind, I feel a real responsibility to make sure this fine car goes to a good home; a piece of automotive history like this really needs to be preserved.

Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business.
