1933 Austin 16/6 Berkeley Saloon SOLD
Austin introduced the ‘Sixteen Light Six’ in 1927, based on the chassis of the well established ‘Twelve’ model. A variety of different coachwork stylers were available and the car sat between the Twelve and Twenty hp models in the Austin range. Powered by a 2. 25 litre engine, which, in common with other Austin models used a cast iron crankcase with detachable cylinder block, the Sixteen Light Six became known simply as the Sixteen by 1930.
By 1933, when the car offered here was produced, the Sixteen ‘Berkeley’ saloon was an established and popular motor car. Visually it could be distinguished from the 12 hp model by the badge on the radiator, proclaiming ‘Austin Six’.
Bearing the distinctive Middlesex registration AME 84, this Berkeley has ownership history dating back to 1933. Very smart in appearance and extremely original, the car has clearly been well cared for over the years.
In the present ownership for the past ten years, recent work has included a new timing chain and top end engine rebuild, replacement clutch and reconditioning of the carburettor. The dynamo has also been overhauled, brakes relined, speedometer reconditioned and two new 6V batteries fitted. All four wings have also been recently resprayed.
The interior trim has fared remarkably well and it wears its 85 years of age with pride. All window blinds still have their tassels and the sunshine roof is easily operated, the car retains lovely original features including rear foot rests, rear drinks tables, original Bakelite ashtrays. There is also a large luggage rack - perfect for suitcases and one's picnic hamper for grand social functions!.
There are a number of notes and receipts supplied, along with the correct Driver’s Handbook and List of Spare Parts.
In all, a very good and correct example of this well regarded model.
More detailed photographs and a video of the car are available on our website.
