1969 Jaguar E-Type Series 2 2+2 Manual, Heritage Cert SOLD

The Jaguar E-Type was first revealed on 15 March 1961 in Geneva to huge excitement from the world's press. In the lead up to the show Sir William Lyons, the founder of Jaguar, realised that he had something very special on his hands and had a second car delivered overnight from Coventry to Switzerland in order to accommodate more test runs at the show. With body styles including the Coupe (FHC), Roadster and 2+2 (FHC) the E-Type is still considered by many to be one of the greatest car designs ever, with Enzo Ferrari famously describing it as "the most beautiful car in the world."

Built on the 30th June 1969, this spectacular E-Type Series 2 2+2 FHC was originally sent to the ex Jaguar Works driver, S. H. ‘Sammy’ Newsome & Co dealership on the 15th July '69 as the original distributor and then supplied new by Parkgate Garage, Coventry to Mr M Buckley on 30 October 1969. Finished in her original Signal Red, with complementary black leather interior, this matching numbers, 4.2 litre with manual gearbox example (as confirmed by a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate) interestingly shows that the first keeper was a Mr A C Bartlett however it was usual practice for cars that were unsold and destined for storage or a showroom, to be signed for by the transporter driver, so although not the 'owner' of the cars, it was the driver who was responsible for them. When they got to the storage facility the responsibility would be taken over by the delivery company leaving the transporter driver on the Jaguar documentation as 'owner' before the vehicle was delivered to the distributor/dealer and before the car had to be registered. Dealers were expected to notify Jaguar of the new owner at the time of first registration, but not all did. A copy of the original log book supplied by the DVLA and an extract of the relevant registration ledger by Coventry B Area substantiates these facts.

Cherished and remaining in Mr Buckleys sole ownership for some 45 years, until he passed away in 2014, the E-Type, now showing a plausible but unwarranted 66500 miles was at the time undergoing partial restoration and with the family unable to complete the works the car was offered on the market for the very first time since its original sale. The current owner (for whom we're helping to sell the car) with his critical eye for detail knew that in order for the car to look its very best it would require a complete strip down and over the course of the next 3 yrs and with close to £40k invested the car now looks simply sensational!

Approaching the swooping lines on this Signal Red 2+2 FHC it's is easy to understand why so many in the classic motoring world regard the E-Type as an absolute design icon. During her 3 year rebuild the majority of the bodywork restoration was entrusted with the Lincolnshire firm, Barkston Refinishing with the team keeping a strong emphasis on originality and detail. Resplendent in her original Signal Red the car looks breathing taking; panel gaps are excellent throughout (some may say better than when new), the brightwork has been re-chromed at considerable cost, new rubbers fitted throughout and she now looks every bit as good as the day she was delivered when new!

The attention to detail continues when stepping inside over the E-Types wide sill-step. The black leather seats remain in fantastic condition, beautifully supple, yet pleasingly supportive and with new carpets and interior trim fitted where needed this 2+2 E-Type offers all the style and glamour that a true 60's Grand Tourer should. With its unique side-hinged boot-lid the E-Type also offers ample space for luggage, ready for a weekend away and being a 2+2 there's also room for the little ones too, although they may not appreciate the lack of stereo, but as we all know there's only one sound needed when sitting in an E-Type.....the glorious sound of the 4.2 litre straight six!!

Mechanically the car has wanted for nothing. The owner, who oversaw the restoration, describes as follows - "Irrespective of the car’s original condition, all assemblies and parts were inspected and replaced where necessary to maintain the high standard of restoration. The engine has been completely rebuilt with machining undertaken by Classic Car & Rally, Grantham, and they have fitted new pistons, liners, valves / valve seats, a high torque starter motor, stainless steel manifolds, stubby ram pipes and many more items. Importantly I have retained all original engine ancillaries should the new owner wish to return the car to standard specification."

The 4.2 litre straight six engine fires with ease and settles into lovely smooth idle, exhaust notes burbling nicely through the stainless exhaust system. Being the more desirable manual gearbox model the driving experience is far more pleasurable too and with circa 265bhp on offer the driver can truly enjoy this Grand Tourers superb driving characteristics.

With close to £40k invested in her detailed restoration, a great history file, only 2 keepers, matching numbers (The Jaguar Heritage Certificate confirms that the original engine was changed by the factory and that the current engine number, gearbox number and registration numbers are all original as is the colour combination of Signal Red with black trim) and now showing 67500 miles and having recently place 2nd in class at the Petwood Concours D'Elegance, this stunning Jaguar E-Type Series 2 4.2 litre 2+2 FHC is surely one of the finest examples available and is now looking for her new custodian who will cherish her for years to come.
