A very late, and one of the last C140's Coupes in truly stunning condition. This simply stunning example of its type and was supplied new by Falcon Mercedes, Loughborough and cost well in excess of £80,000...and that's in 1998; that's probably around £150,000 in today's money!. In their day, these cars were pitched against the likes of Bentley's and Rolls Royce's, and it's actually rumored that Mercedes actually lost money on every one of the C140's they sold, as the development costs were staggeringly expensive, and not covered by their already colossal sale price; production was only possible as it was financed by the very successful W140 saloon variant. Now, some twenty years on, the C140 is now gathering pace as a true classic and many, myself included, feel this was the last properly engineered S-Class; this is pure automotive excellence, made to a standard so high, which in today's world of mass produced, throw away vehicles, we sadly won't see again.
These are simply amazing vehicles, and I would say probably one of the most technically superb cars every made. I say that because even though today's cars are full of advanced technology, and the older 80's and early 90's German cars were extremely well engineered, but the W140, especially of this vintage combines the two in a way that no other manufacturer had achieved before or since.
As you can probably see, this car is certainly right up with the best. Many W140's sadly fell into the hands of owners who didn't really understand them or didn't have the sufficient mean to look after them properly. This one has had successive caring owners, all with the means to maintain it properly. The service booklet contains 20+ stamps, the majority of which are from Mercedes main dealerships or Mercedes specialist, and there's also a large file of accompanying paperwork to back up the mileage.
Mechanically, as you'd expect of a impeccably maintained precision, prestige vehicle at this mileage, it's absolutely spot on. Everything it has (and that's a lot of goodies) works exactly as they should. I've paid particular attention to this, as its so often the case with high specification vehicles that its almost accepted, that some things don't work. I'm one of those people who think, if it's there, it's really got to work if at all possible.
Bodywork is probably among the best I've ever seen on a W140. The paintwork is in beautiful order and still even has that "new" (fresh) look about it. Obviously there are a few very, very minor marks, but these wouldn't be out of place on a much newer car.
Driving; well that's just a sublime experience and shows you how the "other half" used to live back in the 1990's. Think of it as a great big iron fist, in a velvet glove. Even twenty two years on, there's still not many cars that can match it's pace, and a little flick of your right toe will see "Mr. Stressed Out Tailgater Sales Rep" in his default company diesel Audi, quickly disappear out of view in the rear view mirror, all executed in true Mercedes fashion with the absolute minimum of fuss, on a massive wave of seemingly endless torque.
Finally, even though the W140 is an extremely well built, durable and very reliable car, just a word of caution here. If you get it wrong with one of these vehicles, it can cost you dearly, and the more neglected the vehicle is, the more that cost is compounded. At the end of the day, owning a good example like this, will have you smiling ear to ear every time you drive it. The W140 Coupe is still the bargain of the century at the moment, especially if you consider the cost of the car when new, and the unparalleled level of engineering your getting; for the price of this car, you could either have a small, bargain basement characterless hatchback, with barely enough power to pull the skin of a rice pudding or this precision German Super Coupe that would pull down the town hall....so why have linen when you can have silk!.
