40 years of Minxes
Hillman used the model name Minx from 1931 to 1970, covering four model ranges. This particular shape was introduced in 1948 as the Marklll with regular upgrades through to the Mark Vlll which was replaced in 1956 by the Audax range.
This particular car
is a Mark Vll, the last model with a side valve engine; the last of this shape, Mk Vlll, had an overhead valve engine.
Following an older restoration, TTN 276 was in regular use and passed an MOT in 2011 with no advisories. Circa 2012 it was stored and rather neglected and by 2015 in need of some TLC.
When I bought it, major recommissioning was needed, which included:
Head skimmed, valves and piston crowns decoked, new head studs & nuts.
Block pressure flushed, water jacket side panel replaced, recon water pump, radiator re-cored, bellows thermostat fitted. Recon Solex carburettor. New fuel pump. New battery, coil, distributor cap, points, plugs, leads.
New master and wheel cylinders, bonded shoes, front flexi pipes, some new copper pipes and fittings, fluid flushed and replaced.
Seats cleaned, repaired, recolonised. Steering wheel & dash refurbished.
Ammeter, oil and temperature gauges and senders fitted.
Flashing indicators fitted, with separate switch for semaphores.
Refurbished petrol tank and sender fitted. New track rod ends.
4 new tyres and tubes, wheels balanced. Boot refurbished.
All new gaskets, hoses and clips fitted where necessary.
Drives well, good oil pressure, does not overheat, very good compression 124±4psi
