Launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963 the W113 SL series started with the 230 SL and Mercedes-Benz Technical Director Prof. Fritz Nallinger said "It was our aim to create a very safe and fast sports car with high performance and despite its sporting characteristics, it provides a very high degree of comfort". It was the first sports car with a "safety body" based on Bela Barényi's extensive work on vehicle safety and it had a rigid passenger cell and designated crumple zones with impact-absorbing front and rear sections built into the vehicle structure. Additional body design work by Paul Bracq gave it the nickname 'Pagoda' thanks to the slightly concave roof on the optional removable hardtop that resembled a 'Pagoda' roof. These models were produced from 1963 starting with the 230SL then the 250SL in 1967 and finally the 280SL in late 1967 until it ceased production in 1971.
This original UK supplied RHD Mercedes 280SL 'Pagoda' Sports Chassis No 11304422016095 and Engine No: 13098322010485 is a 'Matching Numbers' car and was first registered in Uxbridge, Middlesex on 21st August 1970.
It is finished in Signal Red with a Tan MB Tex interior, Brown Carpets, Beige Mohair Soft Top, Red factory Hard Top, original 2778cc 170bhp Fi Engine, 3 Speed Automatic Transmission, Power Assisted Steering, Period Becker Europa Radio, original instrumentation and Steering Wheel, original Steel Wheels with 'full face' Wheel Trims and BF Goodrich white wall Tyres.
The car has an extensive service history with a huge file of invoices and MOT certificates dating back to 1980 plus a fully documented ownership history from new in 1970 right up to the present keeper who purchased the car from the previous owner in October 1995 and it has now covered a genuine 93,800 documented miles from new!
The car was purchased by the previous owner in 1990 and he had the car completely restored in 1991 at huge expense using many new Mercedes parts and panels supplied by Mercedes dealer Hughes of Beaconsfield.
During the current owners 23 years of ownership he has spent a further £20,000 on the car including a full repaint in 2008 along with a full Engine rebuild and Auto Gearbox overhaul, new trims and rubber seals, a new petrol tank, fuel lines and filter, 4 new Bilstein shock absorbers, overhauled fuel injection pump, new 123 electronic ignition system, new exhaust silencers, new petrol pump, new radiator and a new Mercedes battery and battery carrier.
Since it was completed the car has covered less than a 1,000 miles and has been kept in his centrally heated garage for the 23 years of his ownership and despite the very low mileage covered, it has been MOT'd every year and serviced when required. It was last MOT'd on 13th November 2018 and passed with no advisories.
This car is in exceptional condition throughout and drives beautifully and will only continue to increase in value in years to come.
Upon sale the car will come with our own 6 Month Mechanical Warranty.
