In 1936 Buick offered the "Sport Coupé" body style on the Series 40 Special chassis for the first time. Only 2.003 examples were built and few are still in existence. The 1936 modelyear Series 40 was the start of succesful Buick sales, and this range had it all : dramatic new styling, hydraulic brakes, slanted v-type windshield, bullet-type headlamps, independent front suspension, new alloy pistons and improved water temperature control. This Buick Special is powered by one of Buick's famous straight eight engines : the 233 cubic-inch version which developed 93 horsepower thanks to a two-barrel Stromberg carburetor. It was capable of 85 mph, which was quite an achievement in the thirties.
Driving this car today is quite sensational. The torquey straight 8 engine offers good performance while producing a nicely understated sound. It's a comfortable ride with a commanding driving position. This example is in lovely condition, with beautiful "Art Deco" style interior fittings, beautifully trimmed seats and even the working original radio is still present. More surprisingly, the factory installed antennas fitted under both running boards are still there as well ! The body was repainted some years ago in a period correct colour combination, and has now a few tiny stone chips in the paint because of use. The engine (with factory painted text "Buick Eight - Valve-in-head - silent oil cushioned" still on the cam cover) runs sweetly in an almost completely silent way. The gearbox is easy to use, and the drum brakes are quite powerful for a car from this era. The Buick is very well documented, with original hand written logbooks, 1936 shop manual, a Buick radio installation and operations manual and some period photographs.
This car must be incredibly rare in Europe, and is an absolute stunner from the era when American cars where the best and most beautiful in the world. Compared to many other prewar cars, this Buick is a very advanced motorcar and really easy to drive. It is a lot of car for this kind of money, and a useable and good looking classic car in a very correct and original condition.
