Early Sprites and Midgets are very highly regarded in classic car circles – they are seen to be one of the most fun, enjoyable small British Sports Cars available and represent fantastic investment potential. They are the ‘purest’ of all Spridgets, with no external door handles, clean lines and lots of chrome. This car is no exception – it is without doubt one of the nicest cars available on the market at the current time and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this price range.
Restored at vast expense by an enthusiast previous owner, who has had the car for the past 12 years. It was only being sold as he had moved onto his next major project! The fit, finish and quality of the restoration is testament to the huge number of hours that have been put into this vehicle – nothing has been scrimped on.
It would be impossible to list everything that the car has had. The shell has been stripped bare and has had a total structural and body restoration, including complete floors, sills, boot floor, inner wings, outer wings, replacement bonnet – the list goes on and on! Painted in Tartan Red, the bodywork is very straight indeed and the panel gaps are excellent for a Midget. The welding is of good quality throughout. In terms of brightwork, most of it is new, including front and rear bumpers, side strips, grille surround etc.
Mechanically, the car has had all new suspension, brakes, fuel and brake lines, all new hydraulics, a reconditioned gearbox, rear axle rebuild, new exhaust, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. As you can see from the photos the car has not seen a wet road so everything is in excellent order. The engine is a ‘10CG’ 1098cc unit, and judging by the number, it is most probably the original too. A compression test revealed 150psi across the board, and the car has just had a carburettor rebuild with new needles and jets, and the timing has been set up. Oil pressure is good and there are no overheating issues. The recon gearbox selects gears nicely and does not jump out of gear. It ticks over smoothly at the correct RPM and starts from cold with ease.
The interior is simply stunning. Over £1500 was spent on a professional retrim, which includes new high-quality leather seat covers and foams, new carpet set, dashboard and door car trimming – the list goes on! In terms of weather gear, the sidescreens are present, and have new seals and fixtures ready to fit. A brand new full-length tonneau is included and fits very well indeed. The new owner may wish to purchase a new hood – very easy to fit as there is no header rail, and can be bought from Don Hoods for around £130. I doubt you’ll be wanting to take it out in the rain, though!
A big chunk of bills and receipts for the majority of parts purchased for the restoration are included, and the current V5c is present.
The car has done very few miles since being built. No, it’s not a brand new Honda, so the new owner will likely have a few little bits and bobs to do as the car settles down into regular use. I can’t see anything to worry about for the moment, though! I haven’t been able to do too many miles in it myself yet because of the wet roads we’ve had in recent weeks.
It is not a concourse show car but is a car that has been built to a high standard. There are a few very minor paint chips here and there that have been touched up but are virtually un-noticeable. There is no bubbling or rust anywhere on the bodywork – it’s absolutely sound, both bodily and structurally, with no evidence of filler. I am certain that the first viewer will buy the car – it’s not the usual tarted-up heap. I have priced the car VERY reasonably when compared to other cars on the market. I travel all over the country to buy cars and this is the best early Midget I’ve seen for sale in a good while.
