The Mini was a made by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 until 2000. The original is considered a British icon of the 1960s and its space-saving front-wheel drive layout that allowed 80% of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage influenced a generation of car makers. In 1999, the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century behind the Ford Model T. This distinctive two-door car was designed by Sir Alec Issigonis, and was manufactured at the Longbridge and Cowley plants. The Mini Mk. I had three major UK updates; the Mk. II, the Clubman and the Mk. III. Within these were a series of variations including an estate car, a pick-up and a van. The Mini Cooper and Cooper 'S' were sportier versions that were successful as rally cars, winning the Monte Carlo Rally four times from 1964 through to 1967. Initially, Minis were marketed under the Austin and Morris names, as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini Minor until Mini became a marque in its own right in 1969.
Brooklands Cars are proud to present this unique motorcar to market for the first time.
This Motorcar, in particular, was purchased by Author and ‘The Goon
Show’ star Spike Milligan from his local dealership Skinners of Rye, East Sussex in 1988 and it remained as his main form of transport until his passing in 2002.
Milligan was a well-known advocate of the ‘mini’ marque, having many of them over the years, as shown in the famous television advertisement in the early 1980s, He reportedly made his appearance free of charge due to his utmost belief of the marque. Furthermore, Milligan showed his support when selling the Goon Transcripts for £15,000 pounds, he purchased each of his family members a mini.
‘They loved them, just the right size for a young person. To me its the car of the age. Not just the year or the century. The age’
This quote featured in the October 1996 instalment of ‘Mini World’ Magazine where Spike had a segment.
Spike was known for being an environmentalist and animal welfare activist, as seen on the Mini through the rear window stickers that were placed during Spikes ownership, other anecdotes that surrounding the comedian include the wooden gear knob that was gifted to Spike for his birthday from his daughter Jane. Jane would be the next custodian of the car until 2016, when it left the Milligan family ownership and was subject to a sympathetic restoration, retaining many important features that relate to the comedian/poet.
This includes retaining the original seats, where you share the workspace of one of 20th centuries founding fathers of comedy.
The Motorcar is consistent with a high standard of bodywork and mechanicals throughout. The comprehensive history file features many Spike Milligan articles alongside a record of restoration work that was completed over the past four years, totalling to over £16,000.
