1965 ASTON MARTIN DB5 SOLD

Original UK right-hand drive Aston Martin DB5
Engine rebuilt to 4.8 litres with steel crank, Carrillo rods and Cosworth pistons
Upgraded with AP Racing brakes and Koni shocks all round
The ultimate fast road spec DB5 with 345bhp and 353 lbs-ft of torque
The Aston Martin DB5 does not need much of an introduction. After being used in the James Bond film, Goldfinger, the DB5 shot to stardom and for the past 50 years has been one of, if not, the most iconic and desirable cars of all time.

Introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1963, the DB5 was an evolution of the DB4 Series V with the engine enlarged to 4 Litres to allow for greater flexibility and torque. The optional ZF 5-Speed gearbox became standard early on in production and the lightweight Superleggera body design, developed by Touring of Milan and first used on the DB4, was kept for the new model.

This particular example of the iconic Aston Martin DB5, offered for sale at the Classic Motor Hub, was delivered new to Cyril Williams Motors in Wolverhampton to be prepped and delivered to its first owner in May 1965. The first owner clearly had good taste as the original specification was California Sage with Red leather, a simply stunning colour combination. We are still researching the early history of the car as it is unknown at present. What we do know is that the car was bought in the nineties by someone who had a dream to bring the car he had probably wanted since childhood, up to more modern standards.

The work was entrusted to some of the best specialists at the time, Fourways Engineering and Shapecraft of Northampton, the latter of whom are known for specialist bodywork for the likes of the Sultan of Brunei. The first stage of the project was to completely strip the car down including removing the body. The chassis was shot blasted, restored and repainted and the body was stripped to the bare metal and repainted in Caribbean Pearl Metallic with a Beige leather interior. During the body restoration, the decision was made to flare the front and rear wheel arches slightly so as to fit wider Torino alloy rimmed wire wheels and therefore modern 255/60/ZR16 tyres. The wider wheel arches also allowed the fitting of AP Racing vented and drilled disc brakes all round with AP Racing calipers, these modifications transform the handling performance to a level that the original designers couldn’t have dreamt of when they created this car.

On the mechanical front the owner really went to town. A new block was ordered from Aston Martin and was subsequently bored and stroked to 4.8 Litres! A steel crank with Carrillo rods and Cosworth pistons was installed as well as a high capacity oil pump so as to keep up with the demands of this monster engine. The cylinder head was gas flowed, ported and fitted with unleaded valves, Vantage specification camshafts and triple Weber carburettors. The 5-Speed gearbox was sent to ZF to be rebuilt and was re-installed with a balanced heavy-duty clutch assembly. Improved cooling was a necessity so a new alloy radiator and oil cooler were made and an electric fan fitted.

The rear axle was completely stripped and rebuilt with a limited slip differential, competition half shafts and heavy duty bearings. The suspension features Koni sports shocks and heavy duty springs on the front and the rear has been converted to Koni coilover shocks and springs.

The result is a totally unrecognisable car mechanically retaining its most recognised of looks and designs, albeit with a bit of muscle sculpted in. When this car left the Works in 1965 it produced a respectable 282bhp and 280 lbs-ft of torque, today the figures are an astonishing 345bhp and 353 lbs-ft of torque!

The car was used and enjoyed until 2005 when the current owner bought the car. As a keen rally driver and enthusiast, the appeal of an Aston Martin DB5 to this specification was too good to pass up. Upon purchasing the car from Post Vintage Engineers he had them repaint the car in Silver Birch and return the interior to original specification and finished in Dark Red leather. The car was already fitted with a modern sound system but the current owner sourced a very desirable Becker Mexico unit and had the sound system brought into the 21st century with iPod connectivity.

The current owner has enjoyed this stunning Aston Martin DB5 for over 13 years now and the acquisition of a new dream toy means there is a unique opportunity for someone who wants a DB5 which looks and drives like James Bond himself designed it. This is not a purist or collectors car and is not priced as such, this is for the car connoisseur with a huge imagination and love for driving who wants to enjoy this gorgeous machine for the pure thrill of it. With Platinum level DB5’s still hitting the £1m mark and good matching numbers examples going for close to £800,000, this really is an exciting prospect with enough leeway to return this car to original specification, if the new owner so wished, although we here at the Classic Motor Hub feel it should be left exactly as it is and enjoyed as the previous owner intended.
