2000 Original Series 1 S1 Lotus Elise 1.8 For Sale
Finished in the original silver metallic this late 2000 'W' plate car has been my pride and joy for some time now and has provided an immense amount of driving pleasure. It comes with a full 12 months MOT and has stacks of history including many recent parts. It's had only 2 previous owners from new and the last owner (A really nice guy from Nottingham) owned it for over 12 years. It has also just been fully serviced by a specialist including full cambelt kit and replacement of all fluids including gearbox.
I looked at many cars before buying this one and although the miles were higher than some I'd looked at (80k) it had an extensive history and had been used regularly, which was a key consideration as many low milers I'd looked at had suffered from lack of usage. It was attractive also in that it was a late series 1 model meaning the quality and development issues of the earlier models had been all eradicated by this point.
There are some marks on the body in line with its age as well as some fibreglass bubbling in some places but overall these are minor and the car looks great. I liked this aspect as it showed that the paint was original and wasn't so flawless that I would be disinclined to use it in case it got a stone chip!
When I first bought the car I booked it into Lotus Elise specialist Blink Motorsport to give the suspension a thorough inspection. The original (and poor quality) Koni dampers were still fitted and past their best so were upgraded to a later set of Bilsteins which provide a better ride whilst maintaining the fantastic handling balance. Both front lower ball joints were identified as being worn as was a rear wheel bearing so these were replaced with genuine items and the car was then given a full geo set up and alignment to the original factory settings. The transformation is sensational and it drives brilliantly - I cannot fault the way this car responds, handles stops or go's, it is truly fantastic.
The engine is fantastically responsive yet refined and uses no oil. It doesn't smoke or smell and has just been fully serviced using the correct plugs, filters and Shell Helix synthetic oil. It has also been fitted with an uprated 3 layer head gasket to ensure the traditional K Series issues are all but eradicated. It is all exactly as it should be and is still capable of an easy 30mpg. It produced 118hp from new but was mapped by Lotus meaning the combination of its ultra light weight (725kgs) allowed it to get from 0-60 in just 5.9 seconds. It feels remarkably rapid, the engine feeling very sprightly indeed.
The transmission and differential all operate as new and the clutch, brakes and steering all work perfectly.
I have recently fitted some custom rubber mats from Eliseparts.com as well as getting some genuine Lotus driving lights as the original ones are getting a bit foggy through age, quite common for these cars (they just need fitting) The windscreen was recently replaced due to a stone chip so is nice and clear with none of the wiper blade damage associated with some older cars. It also has a new, higher level boot prop from Eliseparts (much better than the original short version) to allow even more access to the surprisingly useful boot.
The original red leather interior shows minimal signs of wear including the steering wheel and gear lever - it could quite easily be a car with less than half the mileage. The optional red fabric roof with all the correct original fittings is also included. I had the heal pads and seat side bolster renewed as they were looking a bit tired so now the interior looks great.
I really liked the originality of this car and didn't want to change this. The only modifications now being the uprated M144 Mintex pads and Dot 5 synthetic brake fluid matched to a new genuine brake master cylinder to help address the slightly vague pedal feel all cars had from new. This car also benefits from not having the warp-prone aluminium brake discs of the early models.
The tyres are all excellent Toyo T1-R's summer tyres with plenty of tread and have been fitted to early S1 genuine original wheels (the later design original wheels come with the car but are far less pretty than these ones in my opinion). I had these professionally refurbished at significant expense and they are beautifully finished and have the original Lotus centre caps fitted also.
This car comes with the desirable Touring pack option which consists of deep pile floor mats, front driving lights, audio preparation with speakers and nets inside to help with storage space. It has the full red leather interior option also as well as the optional factory fitted immobiliser. A cigar lighter is fitted which is great for powering a sat nav and a new CD MP3 and iPod stereo has just been fitted and sounds great, even when driving with the roof off (it's barely been on in my ownership as the car has always been parked in my garage when not being used).
Everything also operates as it should (such as the original Stack instruments, heater and lights) It come with its original documents pack, 2 sets of keys, a car cover and is fully HPI clear.
It qualifies for cheap classic car insurance (I recommend Classicline) and is also cheap to tax. Parts prices are small and there is a fantastic community of owners to help with maintenance and sourcing parts. I have also recently added an Elise-themed private number plate that any enthusiast would appreciate.
Any inspections are welcome and if you have any questions please let me know.
