The SO models were special order buses, which had a variety of different specification options depending on the number. The SO42 and SO44 models have always been the most sought after, featuring a small Fibreglass pop top roof with the classic yellow Westfalia canvas. This rare and beautiful bus has spent the majority of its life in the USA before recently being imported to the UK.
This bus has undergone an absolutely enormous restoration to get it to the standard it is today. This has involved the entire shell being stripped of every single component before being acid dipped to bring it to a bare metal state. This is the ultimate way to restore any classic vehicle and especially a classic Volkswagen that did not have future rust protection in mind when it was originally built over 50 years ago. Acid dipping the vehicle allows the restorer to examine every square inch of metal and thus enables every single piece of rust to be replaced with clean and fresh metal. As can be seen by the photos in the advertisement, the bare metal shell was prepared to the highest standard before paintwork was even thought about. The bus has had a brand new rear corner panel, long panel, short panel and also the renewal of the cab and cargo floor areas. Once all of the welding had been completed, the entire shell has been primed and painted in the all time favourite and year correct Volkswagen colour, ‘Velvet Green’. The paintwork has been carefully prepared to a glass like finish throughout the bus and the entire shell including the underside of the vehicle is absolutely spotless. The original Fibreglass rooftop and steel wheels have been painted in white as per original style specification.
After the enormous workload of restoring the shell was complete, the refit began. No expense has been spared and as such a brand-new 12V wiring loom & fuse box has been installed. Every single salvageable original component has been carefully cleaned / refurbished and sympathetically refitted to the bus to ensure that it retains its originality for decades to come. The 1600cc engine has been stripped down, reconditioned and installed into the vehicle and runs beautifully. Brand new brake lines throughout + new master cylinder and wheel cylinders installed.
The bus has had a bespoke interior installed that features a full width rock n’ roll bed (Best on the market) with new bed cushions. Fresh upholstery throughout in coffee beige vinyl.
We specialise in the restoration of these vehicles, and in particular the building and fitment of bespoke camping interiors. As such, we are able to alter / modify absolutely anything on anyone of our buses to tailor / customise it to your exact requirements. Fitting out the inside of a classic Volkswagen Camper is similar to designing the inside of your house, so we fully understand that a lot of this comes down to personal preference. With this in mind, please do not be put off one of these vehicles based on a list of colours and designs that do not suit your preference as we would be delighted to amend / replace anything to suit your exact needs.
