For Sale 1997 Mk3 VW Golf VR6 - Fast Road Spec
A very special car with a recent full engine rebuild.
137,500 miles (will rise slowly as still in occasional use)
Full Service History. I inherited a good wedge of invoices when I bought the car and have added every receipt to it since. I also have all MOT certificates since new plus all tax discs in my ownership. All now fill a thick ring binder.
Bought the car in early 2010 when it had done just under 100k miles.
I am the 5th owner
Recent service in 2018 and a full service (all fluids) in 2017 since which its done 3000 miles.
New MOT in late Nov 18. Only advisory is for mild feathering on rear tyres.
Chains and tensioners replaced in Oct 17. This was part of a full rebuild costing over £3k. (see below)
VAGCOM clear - no fault codes
Majority of work in my ownership carried out by The Phirm (highly respected VAG specialists). They know me and the car well.
Car currently SORN but can come with a fresh MOT.
KW V1 Coilovers (springs re-powder coated yellow in early 2015). Coilovers in excellent condition. Car is sensibly lowered with a compliant ride. No rubbing on arches.
Eibach ARBs front and rear
Fully polybushed all round (powerflex)
Vibratechnics competition front mount; Vibratechnics fast road rear and gearbox mounts (not harsh but remove the vagueness in the drivetrain).
2.8L VR6 OBD2
Full engine rebuild on the original block in Summer 2017. Chains and tensioners replaced; three new pistons in rear cylinder bank, complete head rebuild with new valves, heavy duty valve springs, stem oil seals, water pump, mk4 starter motor, and clutch replaced. All done by VW and Audi Centre, Stonehouse, GLOS. Photos to prove.
Aux belt tensioner replaced in Mar 16.
Autotech 262 cams fitted late 2015.
Brand new 120 amp alternator in Dec 18.
Brand new Yuasa battery in Feb 19.
NewSouth phenolic gasket fitted between inlet manifold and head
Colour-coded (Dragon Green) VR6 DOHC engine cover.
United Motorsports bespoke remap completed in Jan 17 which has adjusted the fuelling to make the most of the cams. Also slightly raised the rev limit.
In short the car runs really well and sits at lambda all the way from tick over to the red line.
JOM Chrome bonnet lifters (Standard bonnet stay available if preferred.)
Pipercross performance air filter in standard but drilled air box - air filter only 8000 miles old.
Full custom stainless 2.25in cat back exhaust system (two smallish boxes) with twin slashed tailpipes. Built onto the car in 2017 by Infinity Exhausts, near Bristol. Tailpipes polish up beautifully with Autosol. Lovely exhaust note.
02A Manual 5-speed with stock ratios and stock final drive
Short shift kit (reduced gear-lever throw) from Dave 16v on VR6OC forum
All shift tower bushes replaced in late 2014. Billet shifter linkage bushes fitted at same time. All this means a really positive gear change - a massive improvement over the slightly vague stock cable change feel. Frankly, the gear shift is now as good as you can make a cable change 02A.
Dragon Green metallic pearl effect paint in very good condition. Its not perfect - there is a patch of lacquer peel on the roof the size of a 50p piece and behind the wheels on each front wing. There are 3 small marks on the rear bumper. And a couple of minor scuffs on the doors. And I have touched in the odd stone chip. But to be honest and fair, the whole car really does polish up well and looks great at any meet or on any club stand. I regularly use a range of Autoglym, Meguiars and Dodo Juice products on the car.
Vento front end - bonnet, lights, grill fitted in Aug 14.
Both front wings replaced and painted matching at same time. Waxoyled on the inside. Front arches professionally rolled and sealed.
Replacement front arch liners fitted Jul 15
Sills and jacking points cleaned, welded and painted in Nov 15.
Early (deep) chin spoiler fitted.
VR6 Side skirts
Car has all but the VW badges removed to keep it understated.
Virtual Daylight bi-xenon HID kit 8000K (HIDs for both dipped and main beam) Bright but correctly adjusted to avoid blinding oncoming traffic.
White LED sidelight bulbs. LED rear number plate bulbs. And LED reversing light bulbs which look great
De-wipered tailgate. Colour-coded steel bung and washer from the States. Rear wiper motor and arm will be included in sale.
Recent Bosch wiper blades on the standard front arms. Though I tend to use Rain-X to minimise the need for them.
Compomotive TH1780s (17 x 8) in silver with continental PremiumContact 6s on fronts and Yokohama Parada tyres on rear. Excellent tread all round. Comps are very rare wheels now and cost £1k to buy (without tyres) about 6 years ago. Excellent condition - not mint but very good condition.
Full wheel alignment completed in Nov 15.
Red Brembo 323s from Seat Leon Cupra R with Mintex pads and recent Pagid discs (Jan 17). No lip on the discs.
Goodridge stainless braided hoses all round
Standard mk3 rears calipers (recently serviced so no sticking) with very recent discs and pads.
This brake set up is progressive and really stops well with no judder.
Hand brake is also well adjusted.
ABS fully working. (On start up, bulb on dash lights up then goes out as it should.)
Colour Concept Recaro deep bolster black leather front seats with matching rear bench. Rare rear seats with headrests. Leather is excellent. No fading or scuffs.
Matching black leather door cards. Driver's door card has a minor cut just up by the wing mirror. Was there when I fitted them. Never really worried me because its not that visible.
Grey plastic trim all in really good order.
Sunroof fully working - slides and tilts perfectly. Brand new sunroof seal fitted in Nov 15.
All 4 electric windows working perfectly (I replaced the NSR window regulator in 2015.
Stock VR6 airbag steering wheel professionally retrimmed in dark grey Alcantara by Royal Steering Wheels.
Gear knob retrimmed in matching Alcantara. Black leather gear gaitor.
Original Rye Mill VW Dealership grey overmats. But I use another set of black overmats over the top to protect them.
MFA fully functioning.
All switchgear working correctly as it should. Heater works perfectly.
Airbag light fully working. Like ABS light, glows on engine start up then goes out after 2 secs indicating all is functioning correctly.
Rare Pioneer DEH-77MP audiophile CD/MP3 head unit from early 2000s
Pioneer Subwoofer and amp enclosure fitted in spare wheel well. Subwoofer controller wired in by the gear lever.
Hertz DSK165.3 - 2 Way 16.5cm 6.5" Component Speakers in front and rear doors. These are high end speakers complete with crossovers and tweeters. In the front, the tweeters sit in place of the original dash speakers.
Toad full closure alarm fitted and fully working. Internal sensors. Two alarm fobs.
Central locking fully working (following recent repair).
Two proper car keys and factory emergency key
Comes with all original book pack, service book and manuals
I will also include a Mk3 Golf Haynes manual with the car for the right price.
Car recently re-registered on its original R registration after I removed my private plate. However I have a 'VRG' registration plate available which could go with the car by separate negotiation. It would certainly be a great addition.
In all, this is a very tastefully modified, driver focused Mk3 Golf with a substantial sum of money (IRO £8.5K) having been invested in high quality parts and servicing in my hands. There is no Halfords ‘tat’ here. All the invoices are present; you can check for yourself. I truly believe this to be one of the best mk3s in the country. I've not skimped on doing the best for it to ensure maximum driver enjoyment. And it has never let me down. There's no way you could build a car like this for what I am asking for it.
The car has never been tracked but I've driven it on spirited road trips to Wales alongside mates who, on paper, had quicker cars. It sounds ace and makes me happy even when driving slowly in traffic. With over 37k miles done in nearly nine years, it's averaged under 4K miles a year in my ownership. I don't need to drive to work so this is a weekend toy - a luxury really. It has been thoroughly pampered in my ownership and I will miss it.
So the reason for sale: I am going to be working abroad for an extended period in a few months so it's time to sell my toys.
The price: £3900. If you want a standard car this is not for you. However if you want something fun, fast and with character you simply won't find better.
Finally: No cold-calling companies or timewasters trying to tell me I’ve had an accident in the last two years! I haven’t.
