We are proud to offer you a Austin Healey (Frogeye) Sprite Mk1. this car is fresh from a full ground up and bare metal, nut and bolt restoration which is immaculately finished. it really has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Supplied with a British Heritage Certificate this Frogeye was first registered in 1959 as an original Californian left Hand Drive car. Prior to purchasing the vehicle for restoration the car had only three previous owners. A two year period of work then ensued to the highest standard befitting these highly sort after cars and it is now ready for its new owner to appreciate and enjoy.
At the start of the restoration the original car body, bonnet and doors where firstly stripped of all components and professionally chemically dipped to remove all existing rust, paint and original sealants. Where necessary new panels have been used during the rebuild of the car, floor sections including boot floor and chassis, including spring hangers, inner and outer sill. Any rusted metal in remaining panels has been cut out and new sections fabricated and butt welded in place to provide a true 100% rust free car. Considerable time and meticulous attention was spent during assembly of the body on shut lines and panel gaps between doors and bonnet to better than factory original.
The car bodywork has then been painted with 2K Epoxy Primer to provide a rust inhibiting waterproof base paint layer and body panels seam sealed. Numerous coats of 2K High Build primer have been sprayed and then block sanded by hand between application of coats to achieve a true flat imperfection free finish before final application of the final colour. The tartan red paint used is the correct BMC shade of red for this period using a 2K High Gloss paint system and applied both externally and to the body underside. The cockpit of the car including trunk area have also been painted in Tartan red for added protection. The underside and inside wheel arches of the car have been coated in stonechip protection paint prior to being over painted in the final paint to provide a car that looks as good underneath as on top. Many hours were then spent on hand finishing and polishing the external paintwork to a deep glossy mirror shine. For added protection the cavities between bodywork panels have been treated with wax injection.
The car has been given a full new black interior. New trim panels to footwells, cockpit and trunk area with the correct molding to the door pockets and correct ribbed rubber to inside of doors. New carpets and seat coverings. Refurbished original clocks and switch gear are set off with a new period style steering wheel.
Externally the car benefits from rechromed original parts including trims. A new chromed front grille. All new rubber seals and front windscreen glass. A set of original restored and polished side screens with new rubbers and perspex glass. For weather protection the car has a soft top fitted over a restored hood frame.
Mechanically all parts on this car have been stripped and rebuilt including rear axle and the fitment of a superior gearbox. The car is now running an overhauled 948cc engine with leaded 12G202 cylinder head whilst retaining the original rebuilt and rejetted twin SU H1 brass top carburetors with renewed cooper air filters, new fuel lines throughout and new fuel tank. The engine bay has been carefully detailed including the use of re plated original steel nuts and bolts. The original rev counter and clocks are still intact and work as original trough cable driven of the dynamo. The front main headlights use the original sealed beam units and are looking externally original. All new period cotton braided wiring loom throughout. Original 15 leaf rear springs have been retained which have been stripped and rebuilt by a specialist. These springs are no longer available but give a better ride to new replacement items available. All new suspension bushes, rubbers, wheel bearings, seals and front kingpin. Car retains the original drum brake system which has been completely rebuilt with all new brake and master cylinders, new brake lines and hoses. New set of correct size white wall tyres fitted which also add to the original look of the car. New full system exhaust fitted which provides a lovely period exhaust note. Wherever possible all other original parts for the car have been retained stripped down, restored and new replacement parts purchased where necessary.
An album containing a photographic archive of the restoration will be supplied with the sale. This car is immaculate, runs beautifully and whilst it is both Tax and MOT exempt it will be provided with a 12 month MOT for added peace of mind. This beautiful car has been restored with meticulous attention to detail and longevity in mind and is now ready for driving, showing and mostly enjoying
