Launched in 1961, the MG Midget was a slightly more expensive, badge engineered version of the MkII Austin-Healey Sprite. The Sprite was intended to fill the gap of a low cost sports car left by the original T-Type MG Midget, which meant many MG buyers turned to Austin-Healey thus badge engineering an MG version made sense. The vehicle was essentially the same as the Healey version, apart from some internal and external trim changes to justify the higher purchase price. The Midget remained in production until 1980, after receiving revisions over the years.
This particular car is the MkIII version, which was the last model before the ‘rubber bumper’ variant, and is arguably the ‘best of both worlds’ having the 1275cc engine with the chrome aesthetics of the earlier cars. The current owner is only the 3rd from new, having had it many years. It was laid up in a garage until the 1990s when it was decided to restore the car due to the ravages of rust.
It was completely stripped down, and a new ‘Heritage’ bodyshell was obtained (now over £10,000 to buy) to rebuild the car into, meaning complete structural soundness without any welding work to be carried out. Tudors of Market Drayton sprayed the shell and body panels inside and out in the original ‘Vermillion Red’ colour, and many parts were either renewed or replaced as the build took shape. Unfortunately, due to various life circumstances, the restoration slowed down, and has only recently been finished in 2018.
The car is completely standard, with the only significant modifications being a Stainless Steel exhaust, and the electric fuel pump relocated to inside the boot rather than the wheel arch, keeping it out of harm’s way. The mechanicals were found to be in good shape, having only new gaskets/seals where required before reinstallation. The peppy A-Series engine starts and runs as you would expect, ticking over with a ‘burble’ at the tailpipe, and accelerates willingly through the gears. The gearbox is a little noisy in all but top, but nothing out of the ordinary with these and the gears select positively with no ‘popping out’ on the overrun. Many suspension components were replaced, including bushes, front springs and refurbed dampers… The trademark Spridget ‘chuckability’ is up to scratch, putting a big smile on anyone’s face!
Looking around the car, the bodywork is lovely and straight with a high-quality paint job, with only tiny marks from panels behind handled in the garage. Much of the chrome work has been restored, and the bumpers are new. The original ‘Rostyle’ wheels have been blasted and powder coated, and shod with new radial tyres. The interior has been retrimmed with leather seats, new carpeting and door cards. The vinyl ‘soft top’ roof is in sound tear-free condition; as are the original tonneau covers (full, and hood cover) for when you want to carry on motoring in the rain!
All in all, this is a fantastic, shiny red sports car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed, and makes trouble free classic motoring for the 2019 season, with the added bonus of tax and MoT exemption keeping costs down. The odometer reads 35,765 but we cannot verify this. Please get in touch if you are interested!
