The V10 M6 celebrates its status as the last of the naturally aspirated M cars in exuberant fashion. You’ll never forget your first proper drive in an E63 M6. With its Formula 1 derived engine – delivering ‘mad as a box of frogs’ performance, agile, supple chassis and sporty interior, the M6 is surely destined for classic status – if it isn’t there already. There really is nothing like the V10 power plant shared with its close sibling, the E60 M5. But unlike the M5, the M6 was produced in relatively small numbers, and further boasts a lower centre of gravity whilst weighing in at 10 or so kilos less, due to the carbon fibre roof. At low revs the engine sounds and feels eager but controllable. But open up the taps, watch the revs shoot up, and as you pass the 5000 mark, just feel the face-pulling wave of power as that racing DNA shows itself, and you tear off towards the horizon.
Controlled by a single clutch, semi-automatic gearbox (which, whilst a little challenging at first, soon settles down as you learn the timing for the necessary throttle lift) operated by either paddles or stick shift, the M6 feels like a proper sports car – delivering super car performance and an utterly absorbing drive. The head-up display is no gimmick – its indispensable for the spirited driver who wants to maintain every ounce of concentration for the job in hand - a V10 M6 at flat chat is not a thing for the feint hearted. The HUD has several settings – you can choose to see the nav and other pointless information, or just set it to race mode, showing a huge rev counter and little speed indicator. That’s the one for the true M enthusiast!
This particular M6 is about as good as you’ll ever find. Massively specced from new – extended leather and alcantara headlining add a superb layer of refinement – and with ingeniously subtle extras added by the last owner, this lovely V10 really is a one-off. Owned by a true M6 obsessive, the car has been fabulously cared for, and it shows on every level.
There are precious few decent M6s on the market today, and even fewer are of the post LCI variety (the 2008-2010 model years which comprise just 8 per cent of E63 Coupe UK cars) which is universally acknowledged as ‘the one to have’. Notable LCi (Life Cycle Impulse) changes included updated headlight and taillight clusters, detail revision of the boot lid design; an updated iDrive display bringing programmable memory buttons under the CD drive to directly access frequent functions together with an updated iDrive controller (users of the early idrive will appreciate the upgrade); USB audio; and active head restraints added to the front seats.
Standard equipment on the M6 was always top notch but this particular beauty has some extras that make it different and special. Firstly, the car sports a virtually unmarked Full Merino black leather interior (Option X3SW) - a £5,245 optional extra above the standard ‘extended’ leather and which adds Merino leather to the central console, as well as the complete dash, glovebox and door cards, //M embossed Merino headrests and the luxurious and sound-dampening Alcantara headlining throughout the cabin instead of the standard cloth. This is perfectly complemented by the Piano Black Lacquer interior fittings.
Further options include soft-close doors, TV function, High Beam Assistant and Bluetooth mobile phone preparation. In addition, the iDrive LCD screen has been updated from the original 800x480 display to a 1024x800 display featuring far more detailed resolution and adding a reverse camera. As well as the Thatcham 1 alarm supplied with the car during production, the highly rated AutoWatch Ghost immobiliser has also been installed. Externally, the car sports the handsome BMW M6 Competition bonnet featuring twin "precision lines".
The notable standard equipment remains: Adaptive Xenon Headlights, Heads Up Display, Park Distance Control front and rear, Cruise Control, Electric Memory Heated Seats with electric Lumbar Adjustment, LOGIC-7 DSP fibre 13 speaker audio system, DAB, Voice Control, 6 CD Changer and Professional Navigation.
The general impression created by this fabulous M6 is one of a fastidiously maintained and obsessively cared-for machine, in stunning condition. The comprehensive BMW warranty covering this car is in place until the end of October 2019, is further extendable to at least 100,000 miles. Giving the new keeper full peace of mind and another layer of enjoyment. Our technicians have carried out their usual rigorous inspection, and we are delighted – whilst not surprised – at the subsequent hit list. It’s almost empty. So, if you’re looking for the best V10 M6 out there, its entirely possible you’ve found it.
