History & Provenance
This 1987 XJS was first owned by Serco Ltd in London E17. It then changed hands, we believe in the same company ownership in London N18, a year later, in 1988.
From the logbooks accompanying the XJS all the subsequent owners appeared to live in the Andover & Eastleigh areas of Hampshire.
Mr Wright of Chandlers Ford. Mr Wright would admit himself to being of a good vintage and advised us he’d bought the car on a whim around 2014. Interestingly, it was strongly against the wishes of his wife and family. He may well have heeded those wishes because MOT records reveal the car covered around 1,500 miles in his four year ownership. During his ownership invoices for services, ancillaries & tyres in the name of Mr D Wright are present in the file total in the region of £2,000.
Prior to Mr Wright’s commendable ownership the car appears to have been equally well looked after with a well documented Original Jaguar Service Book and a pile of invoices.
Remarkably every single MOT Test is present also confidently verifying the 81k mileage.
The Artic Blue paintwork is simply outstanding. The chrome, brightwork, bumpers, trim & lamps all match & compliment the exterior coachwork of the vehicle. If we were being particularly picky we might say the inner reflective lens of the headlamps have diminished slightly with age, but you’d have to look to spot it.
The sable leather interior is simply superb. The seats are soft, supple and free of cracks, rips or splits. The dashboard is in excellent condition. The carpets remain in great condition. The steering wheel is the very rare Sports steering usually fitted to the TWR cars. A very nice touch. The interior of this car is simply a nice place to be.
Engine & Transmission
The heart of this car is that fabulous V12 and what a fabulous engine this one is. It starts first time every time. Slip the auto ‘box in to D and you can poodle effortlessly around town without a murmur. Apply a bit more pressure with your right foot and the XJS transforms your journey as that turbine like engine hurls you at Starship Enterprise like warp speed down the road to a top speed of 153mph. It is amazing!. Everything works perfectly.
Wheels, Tyres, Brakes
The power of that near 300bhp can take a toll on the important things like stopping, aka brakes, and tyres. Have no worries. The brakes have been checked and overhauled, the tyres have plenty of life left. The lattice alloys wheels are in fine condition.
Due no doubt to a series of careful owners and low mileage this XJS is in marvellous condition. Unlike many on the market it is genuinely rust free in all the usual places. All the electrics function as they should, as do the Achilles heel of the XJS, the rear brakes. The paint is bright and unmarked along with the chromework.
As you lower yourself into the car you will see the rare Sports steering wheel. The sable interior is lovely. As you would imagine from a low mileage car that nonetheless has been used, the genuine original seats have a wonderful patination to them making them feel timeless but characterful, unlike new non-original faux leather replacements we sometimes see. As was once said; they are only original once.
We absolutely and enthusiastically encourage viewings and test drives. For anyone seeking a well looked after XJS with good provenance and history in wonderful condition, you may have found your car.
Jaguar XJS’s are predicated by many in the classic car to be the next e-types. The value of these great cars is finally being recognised. In the last two years prices have been on an incline and look set to continue, making these great cars a great investment right now. However, we do still firmly believe these cars remain under-valued comparative to the rest of the market which is frankly going bonkers.
What are XJS’s worth? The price range is huge at the moment. From £1,500 - £40,000.
Poor Condition – Rough ones can be picked up for as little as £1,000. We would urge anyone to avoid these at all cost, because that is what you’ll end up with; cost!
Average Condition – Average coupes, with money needing to be spent cosmetically or mechanically can be had for between £4,000 - £7,000. That is decent value for a lot of car. A small word of caution. Corrosion is an issue. Cosmetic repairs can easily extend into expensive repairs. The same applies to mechanicals. Brakes, especially the rear can suck £1,000 out of your wallet.
Good Condition – This is where the value is. Good condition vehicles vary in price, from around £8,000 - £12,000. The V12’s attracting most interest. Low mileage examples command a bit more, but don’t always be attracted to that, equally do not be put off by a car with some miles on it. These cars need to be used. Leave them sitting around and complicated mechanical components in the running gear, engine, and brakes simply seize up. Well looked after V12’s engines are good for 250,000 miles. Although we wouldn’t necessarily recommend buying one like this unless fully supported with a Dealer history.
Concurs Condition – We’re never sure what this means. It means different things to different owners and different Judges on different days! However, we have seen exceptional early V12’s change hands this year at just under £40,000 !
What is this one worth? We‘d put this firmly in good condition and in the upper end of that section based on its documented history and outstanding overall condition. Valuing wonderful classic cars is not a science, we are always willing to have discussions about the price.
We have advertised the car elsewhere. We do expect quite a bit of interest!
We very much encourage viewings and test drives, no obligation whatsoever, no pressure, no sales tactics.
We do love classic cars and we do love people who love classic cars! We like to chat too! (As you can tell from the length of our description!)
So, if you prefer, as we do, please give one of us a call and have a short-ish chat.
