After the Second World War, Donald Healey, formerly a works driver for Invicta and then Technical Director at Triumph , started building cars under his own name as well as collaborating with Nash to make the Nash-Healey. He went on to conceive a cheaper model using Austin parts, and entered into an association with BMC, who would produce and market the car as the Austin-Healey. Styled by Gerry Coker and given an unusual backward-folding windscreen, the Austin-Healey 100 – so named for its 100mph capability – went into production in 1953, the first series being known retrospectively as the BN1. The 100 was powered by the 2660cc four-cylinder engine of the Austin A90 Atlantic, developing 90bhp and coupled to an overdrive-equipped three-speed adaptation of the A90’s gearbox. With its lightweight part-aluminium body, the car had a kerbweight of 18. 75cwt (953kg), giving it a lively performance – magazine The Autocar acheived 111mph (178. 6km/ h) with its test example. In 1955 a specially tuned 132bhp competition model called the 100S was offered, just 50 being made. The main change to the 100 was constituted by the arrival that same year of the BN2, which had a four-speed gearbox, still with overdrive. In all, 14, 634 regular 100s would be made, 100S excluded.
The Austin-Healey presented here is a BN2 to 100M specification, dating from 1956, the certificate of conformity provided in 2002 by MG Rover France confirming it to be a genuine ‘M’. Consequently it has two larger 1. 75in SU H6 carburettors and other engine modifications that together take power to 110bhp. Supposedly to a ‘Le Mans’ state of tune that had first been offered in 1954, the 100M as a model in its own right was announced in October 1955; the engine conversion was carried out by Healey at its Warwick works. In British Racing Green with a black vinyl interior, the featured car is in good usable order and is regularly taken on rallies and other classic-car events. It was restored in 2010 by Garage Gire of Gond-Pontouvre in the Charente and an impressive file, with bills, documents the professionalism of the work carried out. This included a full engine rebuild and a complete restoration of the body. Since 2011 the Healey has been regularly used by the current owner, who has no fear of long journeys in the car, having taken it to Corsica for one rally. Driving an Austin-Healey is demanding but rewarding. The noise, the smell, the muscular responsiveness – this is a car that plays to all the driver’s senses. It only takes a moment to realise why the 100 was so well-suited to competition motoring: light, powerful and with good handling, it was a winning formula. Today it is the perfect British roadster for enjoying on historic rallies and in competition events.
