1996 Alfa Romeo 145 2.0 litre twin spark Cloverleaf For Sale
Rare phase 1 Alfa Romeo 145 2.0 litre twin spark Cloverleaf. P469 DOL was first registered August 1996. This beautiful car was featured in Modern Classics magazine in July 2018. The magazine will accompany the car at point of sale. She has done 105,600 miles and has a comprehensive service history.
I bought this Alfa in the summer of 2018. She had been recommissioned by a marque specialist, Autosportivo in Bedford at an expense of £970. See details below. I ran her for a few months and then SORNed her when another classic car, on long term renovation, came back from the restorer. Consequently, there is no space for this Alfa in the garage and its time for someone else to enjoy her.
To be clear, by the time this car is sold it will not have a valid MOT. Furthermore, a pre-MOT inspection reveals she will fail due to rust under the off-side, front inner wheel arch. The car will require a relatively large area of rot to be cut out and new metal welded in where the inner wheel arch meets the chassis rail. There is rust in the same area on the near side inner wheel arch but it appears to be less extensive. It‘s difficult to tell exactly how much rust is on either side without removing the copious under-seal but I have photographed the worst area on the off-side.
If you are still reading, here is the good news:
The car has one red key and one brown key. There is large history file, including a service book that has a massive 20 stamps (details below).
The car is a joy to drive. The engine pulls strongly and accelerates sharply. The cam belt was changed at 104,500 miles. At the same time the car received new oil filter, rear brake pads, new eibach road springs, shock absorbers (front and back) and front top mounts: all at a cost of £970. Since purchase I have fitted a new auxiliary belt, new gas struts on the tailgate and a brand new period Alfa Romeo radio.
The plum coloured paintwork is good for a 22 year old car and appears to be very original. There are a few chips that have been touched-in. Despite the rust in the floor pan and inner wheel arches, the upper part of the body shell is in good condition with no rust in the outer wheel arches, wings or bonnet. The original alloys are in excellent condition and are shod with tyres that have loads of tread. I can’t find an invoice for the tyres but I think they must have all been replaced at 104,500 miles. The interior is clean and tidy. The cloth seats are in excellent condition with no wear, rips or holes. The seats are comfortable and supportive. The headlining was replaced in early 2018. I would say that the previous owner did a good job on the headliner, but the fit is not perfect.
As mentioned before, the car has a comprehensive service history as follows:
28/8/96 Pre-delivery service
At this point, the service book is full! An additional page has been inserted with stamps at 67602, 74775, 78940 and 95699 miles.
To recap, this is a rare car that has many plus points and deserves to be saved and driven. I know that the car would definitely need welding to the front off-side inner wheel arch close to the chassis rail to pass the next MOT. It may require further welding. I know that the previous owner welded a small patch in the driver’s side floor pan but I haven’t inspected the floor pan to see if further welding is required. There is also a small blow from the exhaust. I suspect that this is from the front manifold which appears to need a new gasket. The car does not have a current MOT and would need to be trailered away from a location close to Welshpool in mid-Wales.
