Chassis No. 21286
Registration No. FH 75 ( French Registered)

A technical masterpiece, the Lancia Lambda incorporates a stress-bearing body, sliding pillar independent front suspension and a V4 engine with the carburettor and inlet manifold mounted at the rear of the cylinder head. Combined with a left-hand gear change, a right-foot accelerator pedal and central brake pedal one would be forgiven for thinking that the Lambda was not a 1920s design, but one much more recent. Quirky they may be, but in reality, the combination works superbly allowing for the driver to sit low in the car and enjoy road holding and comfort that surpasses many motorcars of the 1960s. Although very much a road car, the Lambdas proved themselves in competition in lightly modified form, perhaps most notably at the Mille Miglia with a 4th overall in the inaugural event, backed up by another class win the following year.

This fine 8thSeries tourer, chassis no. 21286, incorporates the larger 2570cc engine with four-speed transmission and is thought to have been sold new in France. Although the early history is not known, the Parisian registration ‘FH 75’ certainly dates from 1956.

The current owner purchased ‘FH 75’ in 2014 from the previous long-term owner, Claude Gratzmuller who had owner the Lambda since 1984. With long-distance European touring in mind the current owner has commissioned a sympathetic rebuild of the car. Serdi Engineering have carried out the lion-share of the important engine rebuild work (receipts on file) with the final assembly, including a new aluminium cylinder head and the fitment of the correct-type Zenith 38HK Caburettor, carried out by that doyen of the Sliding Pillar Club, Mike Benwell. A full photographic record of his works is supplied with the car. The gearbox was also rebuilt and a new exhaust system fitted. ‘FH 75’ was also treated to a re-wire carried out by vehicle wiring services (Winston Teague and Matthew Blake) the go-to people for vintage wiring.

The current owner has recently purchased another Lancia Lambda and thus few miles have been covered since the completion of the rebuild. The car is currently French registered and thus, if it remains in the United Kingdom, will require a UK registration document which can be applied for through the club.
Freshly rebuilt by the Lambda cognoscenti, this nicely restored and usable 8th-series tourer is conveniently fitted with a drinks cabinet and, as such, is ideal for long distance touring with plenty of space in the rear compartment for the occupants to enjoy a fine Brunello! Any Lambda is of course welcome at many international events including the famed and ever popular “Sliding Pillar Rallies.”
