Well known in Delage circles, this lovely car is now for sale after some 20 years of reliable service in my ownership. My first vintage car, the Delage has taken us all over France and the UK. She has a long history, being re-bodied by the legendary Fred Shoesmith around 1960 replacing its derelict saloon structure with a rather lovely replica skiff body in the style of Lavocat et Marsaud. Fred was a real craftsman and even built his own English Wheel with which to roll the panels to the correct curvature. Under the bonnet it’s all as it should be with the correct American North East dynastart giving silent cranking whilst also providing the necessary electrical charge. On the opposite side, the brass Zenith triple diffuser carburettor delivers fuel supplied by the French Autovac. Sparks are supplied by magneto. Two magnificent Marshall headlamps illuminate the highway, whilst attractive bullseye torpedos serve as sidelights and indicators. The cockpit seats two with room for two more hardy souls in the rear, protected by an Auster Screen. A nice set of Delage gauges are set in the aluminium engine-turned dashboard. A very good and easily operated hood keeps the driver and passenger dry, whilst an equally good tonneau seals the rear passenger compartment…in the wet they just have to take their chance!
This is not a concours winner, neither is it in oily rag condition, rather it is in excellent used condition and responds well when cleaned and polished. She was treated to a full cellulose repaint (in the same colours of blue coachwork over black wings) a few years ago and this has really stood the test of time. All the caulked woodwork is in fine shape with no sign of deterioration. Useful and discrete additions are indicators and a 12v power supply under the dash. Seats are perfectly serviceable and comfortable but the leather could do with a good ‘feed’. Driving the car is a pleasure although the steering is quite heavy until you are under way – braking is effective and the gearchange is really nice - it is thought that it may be fitted with a close ratio ‘box. There is quite a bit of history with the car including both green and buff logbooks, the latter going back to the 1950s. It appears that the car spent many years in the Patrick Collection (a museum) until that was dispersed, whereupon the Delage once again returned to regular use. It comes with a translated French handbook and a pile of old MOT certificates and various bills and bits and pieces of Delage interest plus photographs of some of the events visited. Mileage, by the way is a pure estimate!
