I purchased this Camper in 2015 specifically for relocating somewhere in Europe? This made the choice of vehicle extremely critical as flexibility and specification would play a huge part in the success of the venture. There were many locations in France, Germany, and eventually Hungary I needed to explore. Initially I looked at RV Style Campers like the Hymer but found them way to large and inflexible for every day use in larger cities, either to park up or lay-up in storage should the need be.
A smaller camper made far more sense, as Ive been able to spend many over night stays parked up in various locations without the need to find and a traditional campsite on route saving both time and money. Initially I looked at new models from all the major manufactures with VW at the top of my list as they offer the best dealer network throughout Europe. An important point to consider when touring for long periods of time out on the road. However although beautifully manufactured, modern Campervan trends appears to have gone "Glampervan" with excessive luxury and a high degree of impracticality as a result. The fact of the matter is that Camping is still a dirty and dusty business which often doesn't bode well with modern luxury & complicated specifications. For successful stress free Vanlife simplicity is King !
Obviously the first Campervan you think of is the Ubiquitous Classic VW T2 and that's where I started. It soon became obvious though in real world scenarios, they are not well suited to long distance motorway hauls mixing it with the large trucks and faster traffic. Their increasing high value and rarity also make restoration prohibitively expensive with a thoroughly sorted van approaching nearly new VW T5 prices. At that point I started noticing the VW T25 on Youtube. Where you found the T2's in picturesque settings with their owners picnicking, you found T25's on top of mountains on serious adventures. The VW T25 Van is the Classic of choice in the USA where the Vanagon comes in a huge variety of specifications with the top of the range being the Westfalia. A VW factory built camper van straight from the VW network. This was the Van for me !
At this point it is necessary to point out that a T25 Westfalia is hugely different from a VW Transporter Campervan Conversion as sold in the UK throughout the 80's & 90s. The design and build quality of a Westfalia Vanagon interiors are to Marine Standards and a testament to my van still looking almost brand new 30 years after she was built. The only choice to be made then was either 2 or 4 wheel drive version. Although Syncro's are wonderful, after looking and test driving over a dozen of them, a problem soon became apparent. That is most of these 4x4s had endured a far harder life. Also they aren't the nicest of vehicles to drive in town due to their truck like transmissions which makes them more expensive to run, less fuel efficient and requiring more frequent maintenance intervals. As always, you should never underestimate the VW communities assistance in finding the best solutions for running one of these Iconic Classics. Contacting "Chad of Living the Van Life" and "Cory of Where's my Office Now". They referred me onto GoWesty, an American Company who specialise in creating the ideal set-up for these VW van camper vans in every detail. GoWesty refers to my Spec as a Vanagon Cross (or in USA slang Swamper) which is similar to Chad's and Cory's set-up so that's what I went for. Just how capable these 2WD Vanagon's are ? Chad highlights regularly on his Youtube channel - details above "Chad of Living the Van Life"
After finding the Vanagon closest to the specification a full restoration was carried out to create the fantastic vehicle I have on sale today. After 4 years and 5 x 3000 mile round trips to Hungary I now have settled in Budapest so the Van has completed its job and is available for sale. This is truly a rare and unique opportunity for to acquire one of the most beautiful and cable VW Campers in the UK which is ready for the greatest of adventures however small or large.
