Professional paintwork was incorporated during the recent major expenditure so now, as to be expected, the whole car stands looking superb.
Panel gaps are all excellent, while glass, lenses, external rubbers and seals remain in a good condition overall.
Striking a dramatic contrast against the Monochrome exterior, the Burgundy fabric and vinyl exudes a stylish, luxurious air. Again, similar to the bodywork, the interior has been subject to extensive improvement recently, and as a result, appears in a fine condition. Happily lacking any defects, all materials look clean, fresh and in a top condition.
There is no cracking to the oval dashboard, a very common known fault, the steering wheel, leather-bound and un-marked. All dials, switches and instruments should little sign of any wear.
The boot liner is intact, load cover likewise, plus a very high quality set of Porsche over-mats included.
This is where you really want to be, behind the wheel of the notorious Porsche 944 Turbo.
The in-line 4 pot, SOHC, 8valve has a displacement of 2479cc. Ali block and head with 2 valves per cylinder, fed via the ever reliable Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system, maximum of 6500 rpm and 0.7 bar of turbo boost.
This produces around 220 bhp, in a small lightweight coupe of only 1360 kgs, enough to propel the 944 from 0-60 mph is approx 6.0 secs, then onward towards approx 155 mph (where permissible), impressive.
The chassis is taut, while adjustable Koni Sports Shocks dampen and absorb any terrain imperfections with ease. The front set up is Macpherson Struts with lower A-arms, coil springs, plus anti-roll bar. At the rear, Semi trailing arms, torsion bars, anti-roll bar.
The clutch is a single plate, dry disc and hydraulically operated. This operates exactly as it should, no excessive play, a good, positive biting point. Having depressed the clutch, gear selection is via a crisp, 5 speed manual, the only drivers choice.
The 944 starts, runs perfectly, and drives surprisingly well for a product of the mid 80’s, more than capable of providing the occasional embarrassment to its more modern and far more valuable counterparts, a very endearing quality. Its impressive turn of pace and sure-footed enthusiasm can be adequately retarded, via the 911 derived, Brembo 4 piston fixed calipers, 12”inch discs and pads all round, ABS fitted as standard.
WHEELS / TYRES
Wheels are 16”inch Design 90 alloys, all are immaculate following recent refurbishment by Lepsons Ltd.
Four new tyres have been fitted prior to sale, 205/50/ZR 16’s, tread depths from 6 -7mm.
SERVICE HISTORY / PROVENANCE
Originally supplied by Glen Henderson Motors Ltd, Bearsden on 01/01/1986. The Porsche soon made its way down to the South East, via Cardiff, London and Maidenhead, where it enjoyed regular servicing by OPC and well known Porsche Specialists including Ray Northway and Autowerke. This accounting for more than 20 stamps in the service book. Sometime after April 2005, the 944 was place into long-term storage (when reading between 128, 352 / 134,800 miles), where it remained until being purchased by the current owner in June 2015. A lifelong enthusiast and classic car collector, he embarked upon a sympathetic total re-commissioning of the Turbo.
These works were entrusted to NBA Sports Cars at Dunsfold Park, (home to Top Gear). Apart from any bodywork that was required, brakes were dismantled and re-built with new pistons, seals and hoses, wear sensors, new discs and pads all round, brake fluid change, timing belt, pulleys, guides, tensioners, balance belt, aux belts, fuel pump, radiator fan switch, battery, DME relay, the list continues.
In all over £17k of investment has been lavished on the Porsche.
With prices rapidly on the move, and even project cars being offered for £15k, this must be a serious prospect and contender for any true enthusiast. Still one of the all time great drives.
A turn keys, beautifully presented 944 Turbo, ready to go and be thoroughly enjoyed, in the best colour for £15,995, what’s not to like?
