Demand for good, honest, BMW project bikes continues to be in high demand, and this early R80/ 7 is a perfect candidate for either a restoration to standard, or custom special.
In many ways, it would be a shame to see such an original bike carved up. It’s a matching numbers bike, and despite not being used for many years, after a light re commissioning, it fired into life instantly.
As a two previous owner bike, it seems to have been spared the butchery that some of these old classics have to suffer. We’ve fitted a brand new battery, checked and topped up all fluids, tyre pressures, etc, and cleaned and balanced the carbs. She’s now off the button, with neutral, oil and charge lights extinguishing as they should. Compressions are even, and well up to original manufactures spec. Lights, indicators, etc, are also all working, with only the stoplamp misbehaving by staying on. Brakes are all operative, but to be honest, quite “wooden”, but no surprise given the length of time she’s stood. No smoke, no rattles, and riding as a good Boxer should. Even most of the paint appears original.
This is obviously one of the earlier R80/ 7’s, complete with the increasingly rare wire wheels (on original alloy rims) and with the twin front disc option, and the preferred drum rear. Of course being an April 1978 build (March ‘79 registered) the bike will be MOT exempt, and road tax free upon application.
As i say, all in all a really great bike that with a little time (rather than money!) could be up and on the road within a weekend. Alternatively, a great base for a nice restoration.
Please feel free to give us a bell to discuss any aspect of this Boxer, and if you’d like more, detailed pictures, just shout. You can get us on the details below, or the details below.

This is my personal BMW that I have owned for almost 9 years. Although Moto Borgotaro leans towards the Italian beauties, we also love BMW, in fact we are mildly obsessed with them. The R80ST is perhaps the best handling street motorcycle BMW ever produced, overshadowed by the R80G/S, the ST gives you a lightweight touring ...

The bike is a 1986 BMW R80RT. 800cc torquey piece of bike. It is fully rebuilt to standard engine running - it's not tuned or bored out, it's very stardard. Before rebuild, it was a box of parts and a partial barn find. On stripping down the engine, it was obvious that the original honing marks are visible down the ...
