1957 STANDARD SUPER EIGHT DELUXE - AMAZING CONDITION! For Sale
HERE is my 1957 Standard Super Eight deluxe in light grey. She really is in the most amazing condition for one of these little family saloons from the 1950s and she makes an admirable alternative to the Austin A35, Ford 100E, Morris Minor etc. Her panels have to be seen to be appreciated while her underside is the best I have seen on these Standard 8 and 10 models. There's not even any "blacking" underneath. She is as straight as a dye and as clean as the proverbial whistle. Likewise her engine bay and two-tone interior. This, being an 8, has access to the boot via two individual folding rear seats. But she is a Super Eight deluxe and so hence the extra chrome work around the front grille and other internal features. She drives as these 803cc models do and is a delightful little "pootle about" classic for someone. If these little Standards float your boat then you will be hard pressed to find a better, nicer, prettier, more solid example. And also, let's be fair. They are now seen as being different in as much as other small saloons from the same era always tend to be more plentiful. I would describe her as being inherently rust and rot free with only a few minor imperfections here and there. They are nothing more than you would have seen on a two-year-old car back in the day and are basically small stone chips etc. She is a real and proper 50s classic. Of that there can be no doubt!
This is a car that can still show off her original factory folds on the metal as well as original spot welds. Just looking inside the door checks is enough to let you know what kind of a pampered life this super Standard has led.
All my classic cars are treated as the equivalent of motoring antiques. This one, for example, is 62-years-old this month! They cannot be compared to the wife's six-month-old Chelsea tractor and they are bound to come with imperfections, quirks and bits and pieces that will need attention even if it is some time in the future. They do however come with oodles of charm, appeal and are there to be loved like a family pet. If you are new to the classic car scene, then please bear all this in mind. Most examples have clearly had work over the decades and I cannot predict how much or how little they will need in the future. That, I am afraid, is the nature of the beast in the world of classic cars. Motoring antiques is what they are. I love my Georgian dining table, but I can see all the scars and signs of previous woodworm. Had I wanted a brand new table, I would have gone to Oak Furniture Land. Well perhaps. Demand is outstripping supply these days and they don't make the old girls any more. So, make some allowances and drive away with a smile on your face. It goes with the territory, and therefore must be accepted, that they are always going to need on-going care, attention and repair. Don't tell me some way down the line that the full beam doesn't work or that you have discovered something I knew nothing about. They are bloody old. It happens. They come in and they go out. It seems as though I have become a "re-homer" of classic cars.
