The Golf GTI Sportline was a run out model of the legendary Mk1 GTI, the car that first introduced us to hot hatches. Introduced in 1975, VW soon decided to transform the Golf into a sports orientated vehicle. Many people regarded this car to be the first “hot hatch”, with its reliability, outstanding build quality, and usability.
The Mk1 Cabriolet was of a unibody construction and was built entirely at the factory of German Coachbuilder, Karmann. It was first seen for sale in 1980 with a manual convertible roof. Later to be introduced was the electric folding soft-top along with heated glass in 1991. Before 1984 the highest specification would’ve been the GLI. After this, with the new model Golf convertible, VW introduced the GTI variant, which became the highest specification.
The Sportline took the already sought after GTI and enhanced it further with Flash Red, Black, or Jasmine Yellow paint, Recaro seats finished in black and red, black BBS RA wheels, and a drop-top roof. With its sub 10s 0-60 time and 108mph top speed the Sportline let us know that this car was no ordinary Golf convertible. The Sportline was a very rare model with only around 400 produced and just over 200 left today.
Electric folding soft-top, Front bumper with integrated spoiler, Rear bumper with integrated under bumper spoiler, Black exterior door handles and trim, Side rubbing strips, BBS alloy wheels with spokes finished in black, Recaro front sports seats, Leather-trimmed sports steering wheel, Roll over bar, Multi-function digital computer, Cigarette lighter with ashtray, Original vinyl cover for soft-top, Immobiliser.
This rare Sportline looks marvellous in Flash Red with contrasting black trim. The gleaming bodywork is perfectly offset by the factory BBS rims, which look great beneath those flared arches. Following a lengthy detailing session the paintwork is supremely glossy all round with almost no blemishes to speak of. All the lights are perfectly clear and the various trim pieces still appear in fine order. The vinyl hood also remains in excellent wear-free condition, still operating smoothly at the touch of a button.
The inside of the car retains a lovely period quality with the black and red Sport upholstery presenting well across the Recaro seats and contoured rear bench. There are few signs of use to speak of, with the fabric itself free from any sagging or discolouration. The dash and fascia also remain in excellent order, as do the carpets. There is no major wear to the steering wheel and the vinyl headlining is also damage-free.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The engine bay is in great order, appearing clean throughout with no signs of damage or poor repair. The free-revving 1.8 fires up quickly and idles up to temperature without fuss. The car performs well on test, with sharp handling and a pleasing exhaust note to boot. Better still, it's accompanied by an excellent service record that boasts 18 entries in the original service booklet.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The GTI sports the correct 15-inch BBS RA alloys that still retain their factory paint scheme of black with silver rims. Despite showing some patina each of the wheels present well, although a perfectionist may choose to refurb. All BBS centre caps are present and the tyres show plenty of life left.
The Golf was supplied to its first keeper in May 1993. It was sold through Cameron Motors (Perth) Ltd, who also carried out the first service at 10,490 miles. The dealer-supplied service book contains eighteen entries at the following mileages: 10k, 24k, 33k, 39k, 56k, 68k, 74k, 78k, 84k, 90k, 96k, 102k, 110k, 116k, 123k, 132k, 139k, and most recently at 149k miles in March 2018. The car has seen just five former keepers, and all original books are present.
A truly stunning example in collectors condition, ready to be used or just admired. A true piece of VW history. Any inspection welcome - 07908983111
