A 1964 Aston Martin DB5 Convertible, one of only 123 examples, currently undergoing a full restoration with a choice of colour, trim and hand of drive.
The DB5 was essentially the next generation of the very successful DB4 but with so many improvements it was launched as a new model. The same 6 cylinder Tadek Marek engine was increased to 4.0 litres with a resultant power improvement of 40hp to 280hp in standard form. A new 5 speed ZF gearbox and much improved braking enhanced the cars driveability and along with many other refinements made this a superb sports car at the time.
The DB5 saloon was introduced in the summer of 1963, a convertible version soon followed and both models remained in production until October 1965 when the factory was given over to the DB6.
The convertible at launch was priced at almost £4,500, much more than the average house price at the time and it’s exclusivity meant that it became one of the must have cars for the rich and famous, as such just 123 examples were ever built!
This DB5 Convertible left the factory in July 1964 in its original Dubonnet with Grey Connolly and Light French Grey Hood to be sold through Brooklands of Bond Street to first owners Display Productions Ltd of Marlborough Road, London. Although the car then passed through several hands it was eventually purchased from a private individual in Aberdeen by the previous long term owner in 1973. This owner used the car as a daily driver for his commute to work until 1978 when an overseas job meant the DB5 Convertible was placed in storage with a view to restoration. Although various elements of the restoration were attempted over time, the owners overseas work commitments prevented him from fully completing any stage of the work. This DB5 has over the last 40 years or so remained in the same ownership but largely unused in various stages of restoration or in storage. It was eventually sold in 2016 to the current keeper who has decided on a fresh full nut and bolt restoration in the hands of Aston Martin specialist Desmond J Smail Ltd, and can be finished in any colour, trim, LHD/RHD, specification combination desired.
