1970 Porsche 911 2.2 E For Sale

In 1963 Porsche replaced the 356 with a larger and more powerful model, which has become one of the most recognisable and successful sports cars of all time, the Porsche 911.

Its long history since 1963 has produced many model variants based for the most part on the same platform. The 1970 model is referred to as the 2. 2 because of its engine displacement. This displacement only lasted for two model years, 1970 and 1971. Available in three trim levels, with different engine horsepower ratings for each. The 'T' had 142 horsepower, the 'E' 175 horsepower and the 'S' 200 horsepower. Even thought the 911 E has less horsepower than the 911 S, the 911 E was actually quicker to 100mph than the 'S', which was why it was dubbed ‘The secret weapon from Zuffenhausen’.

This 1970 Porsche 911 E was dispatched from the Karmann Factory on 17 January 1970 to the Northern Italian Porsche dealer, Delcar in Varese. Finished in Burgundy, Colour code 2424, with Beige Leatherette and Corduroy interior. The car was delivered new to an Italian Doctor with 4 kilometres on the odometer on March 3rd 1970. The car remained in Italy until June 1985 when it was shipped to Canada and sold by specialist car dealer Caliber Automobiles in Toronto. It was driven very little in the following 4 years whilst in the next owners possession.

Purchased by the next owner in 1989 with 40, 000 miles on the odometer, After very careful re-commissioning, including a re-calibration of the MFI system, the car was then enjoyed for around 1, 000 miles per year. The car has not been driven in the rain in the 26 years this owner  had the car. This Porsche 911 E has never had any rust and never needed any rust repair - even for surface rust. The original Wurth undercoating is still in place. This car has never been apart for restoration, so it is a very honest un-restored car that has been partially repainted once, but has never had any panel repair for accidents or rust. The front bonnet where the batteries are located is original and rust free and has only been repainted with rust protection paint (black).

The car has its original interior, which is in excellent condition with all but one of its original corduroy seat panel inserts. The dash has never had a radio installed. There are absolutely no holes cut in the car for speakers. The notorious speaker area of the dash top is original and crack free. The carpets are original and in excellent condition as is all of the leatherette in the interior. Mechanically the car is in excellent condition, being carefully maintained and driven.

It has had a sympathetic update of the later pressure fed chain tensioners, including new timing chain rails, for reliability and long engine life. The Canadian owner of 26 years maintained the car himself, stating he changed the oil twice every year and acquired all the replacement parts directly from Porsche and going to every extent to keep the car original and at the highest possible standard. The car was then sold to the current owner in the UK in 2016 and has covered just 719 miles since it's arrival in the UK.

At 49 years old, to have never been restored or repaired, this 911 E has to be seen in the flesh to be believed and truly understood. It presents some patina confirming its 49 years, but its originality is something to behold.

It is equipped with four period correct Fuchs forged alloy rims that are in very good restored condition. The aluminum is polished and it shows well outside, on the centre of the wheels the black accent paint has been resprayed and it shows very well. 205/ 60/ R15 Pirelli P600 brand radial tires are fitted.

The 911 E is fitted with a rear-mounted 2. 2-liter horizontally opposed flat six-cylinder air cooled, fuel injected engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The engine serial number is 6201351 and indicates the correct 2. 2 litre engine for a 1970 Porsche 911 E which also matches the engine number noted on the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity as being the correct, original engine for the car. The engine is complete with all of its ancillary components and has benefited from the installation of a later timing chain tensioner upgrade kit.

It benefits from a fresh engine rebuild carried out by SCS Porsche which was completed in January 2019 at 109, 230 Kilometres, the first and only time the engine has been apart in its 49 years.

The car's interior is in very good original condition, both front vinyl and cloth seats are in very good damage free condition. The bottom cloth insert panel on the driver's seat has been replaced and its shade is slightly darker than the original piece. No headrests are fitted which is correct for an Italian market 1970 911. The small folding back seats are in very good condition. The door panels are in very good condition but there is some minor damage to the top of the driver's side map pocket. The carpet assembly is in very good original condition with an aged period floor mat assembly installed on top of the carpet. The headliner is in good condition but also shows some water staining in spots. It also is complete with it's original tools and jack, wallet, service and handbooks.
