It is a sad day but we have decided to sell "Bessie" our 1979 Taiga green Westy. After owning Bessie for the last 9 years, enjoying many great holidays and days out, now the family has grown up I can no longer justify keeping her, she needs to be enjoyed more!
Originally she lived her life in the south of France and was imported by French Classics (link included at the end) . I have a good record of her history and the original service book, details of a new engine fitted in 1981 as well as other original items that were included in the purchase; a mosquito net and fabric awning. Since then I have taken the km total to just over 100,000 (though the engine will have done considerably less).
The interior is all the original Westfalia fittings and carpets. There is a fully working gas cooker, pumped water sink and a three way fridge. It has the full width bed top and bottom plus the original child hammock (so sleeping for a max of 5). It also has the original stool!
Mechanically, she has been very reliable over the 12 years of ownership however she experienced a small engine fire in 2016 and though it was put out immediately it necessitated a replacement carb and other components to get up and running. Otherwise she has been a great starter and a smooth runner. Gear changes are incredibly positive not the usual stirring porridge guess work they are renowned for (this is my second van and I can honestly say they are miles apart in terms of how solid they are mechanically). Recently past her. MOT so has a year before her next. She will soon fit into the time scale for applying to become exempt in the UK.
In terms of bodywork some repairs has been undertaken to ensure that she is looking good. This was in the usual places and was carried out by the highly regarded Johnson Autoworks at Loughborough. I have several images available on request. A summary of work - Replaced front panel due to rust under the window, replace rear door with original VW one, replace roof canvas with new and also respray fibreglass roof. Over the last few months I have noticed that the area around the battery tray is in need of attention. This is not structural and would be a small job. Otherwise she is a very honest van with outstanding condition for her age. Underneath she is spotless and was fully waxoyled when the work was carried out in 2017. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this great van! She will be missed.
Other extras included in the sale are a Kyham drive away awning/tent, electric hook up cable
, basically ready to go camping!
