1958 STANDARD PENNANT - MEGA RARE & BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE! For Sale

The Standard Pennant was made for two years only between 1957 and 1959 when the range of small Standards ie: the Eight, Ten and Pennant ceased production to make way for Standard-Triumph's new baby the Triumph Herald.

The Pennant was totally different to the Eight and Ten. It was launched as the top end luxury model and even came with a different body shell! Still powered by the Ten's engine, the 948cc unit, the Pennant's power was increased to 37bhp. It was, in the day, the "sportier" version of its sister cars. Some said it was too little too late at the time, but Standard did at least have a brave attempt at sending their little family saloon way up market. They were rare enough in the day and totally ultra-rare now. For a small 50s saloon, there's a lot going on with a Pennant. More, I would suggest, than with comparable cars of the time such as the Morris Minor, Austin A35 and the Ford 100E.

And how different it looked! The front wings were longer and hooded at the front. The rear end was totally re-designed, giving the model an up to the minute "finned" look. The back end always did look quirky with that rear light arrangement and all Pennants came finished I duo-tone paint. The rear window was larger too. Their interiors were totally different too. Gone was the austere look of the Ten and Eight and, in its place, came a new dashboard with two round clocks in front of the driver. Also gone was the long, stick in a box of marbles gear lever. And wow. In came a small, sporty gear shift. Whatever next? The seats were improved too, as indeed was the entire interior trim. So there we have it. The Standard Pennant. Flying the flag for Standard-Triumph as a last throw of the dice before they heralded in the Herald.

This superb example in light grey and bright blue is believed to have covered just 35, 000 and there is a lovely hand written letter from an enthusiast in the history file that would appear to back that up. All Pennants came with a 948cc Gold star engine and this appears to be the original in this case.

Lovely driver and just so pretty and sound everywhere you look. This is an early example - again according to the detailed info in the history - and as such comes with what Standard called "Vydair" upholstery. The seats are in super order.

Pennants are hardly ever seen nowadays let alone offered for sale. You would be hard pushed to find better. She moved to Ireland around eight years ago but remains on the UK DVLA database and the registration number you see is the one she will be handed once the new owner informs Swansea that she is back here. I brought her back from Ireland this month. It's a simple process.

All my classic cars are treated as the equivalent of motoring antiques. This one, for example, is 61-years-old this month! They cannot be compared to the wife's six-month-old Chelsea tractor and they are bound to come with imperfections, quirks and bits and pieces that will need attention even if it is some time in the future. They do however come with oodles of charm, appeal and are there to be loved like a family pet. If you are new to the classic car scene, then please bear all this in mind. Most examples have clearly had work over the decades and I cannot predict how much or how little they will need in the future. That, I am afraid, is the nature of the beast in the world of classic cars. Motoring antiques is what they are. I love my Georgian dining table, but I can see all the scars and signs of previous woodworm. Had I wanted a brand new table, I would have gone to Oak Furniture Land. Well perhaps. Demand is outstripping supply these days and they don't make the old girls any more. So, make some allowances and drive away with a smile on your face. It goes with the territory, and therefore must be accepted, that they are always going to need on-going care, attention and repair. Don't tell me some way down the line that the full beam doesn't work or that you have discovered something I knew nothing about. They are bloody old. It happens. They come in and they go out. It seems as though I have become a "re-homer" of classic cars.

I accept all major debit cards and a ten per cent deposit is required at the point of sale with the balance due within three days. I can also assist with delivery and so please ask for a quote. Thanks for reading, Martin. the details below).
