Most people with an affection for cars will know about the original Fiat 500... It is as iconic as Britain’s Mini, or Germany’s Beetle. Fiat’s ‘Nuova’ 500 was launched in Italy in 1957, replacing the pre-war 500 ‘Topolino’ as a small, affordable city car. At just over nine feet long, the rear-engined 500 was nimble, cheap to run, and could seat four people plus luggage making it one of the world’s most successful cars - over 3.8 million were sold between launch and 1975 when it was discontinued in favour of its successor, the 126.
This immaculate example is the later 500L, built in 1971 with the slightly larger 499cc engine and was first registered in Rome. Since ‘Lusso’ means luxury, the 500L gave buyers a slightly higher level of trim including large bumper overriders and an updated dashboard. In recent years, the car was part of a private museum in Cosenza, Southern Italy forming part of a ‘People’s Cars’ display. It was then imported into the UK and registered with the current registration number in November 2015. Accompanying is a small file including the previous Italian Certificate of Ownership.
Jumping in, the little two cylinder motor fires up with a pull of the starter and choke handles between the front seats, settling into a thrumming idle, similar to a lawnmower! Once you are used to the small pedals, this nippy little car is a delight to drive on down road with its chuckable handling making it ideal for driving around town or country lanes. The gearbox and clutch working perfectly in all four gears, and the engine will accelerate up to 60mph in time, thriving on revs in that true Italian style… It’ll even return you around 50mpg whilst doing it. The steering is nice and tight, the suspension is knock free, plus the brakes bring you to a stop strong and straight as you would expect. Everything works in the car, from the mirror-mounted interior light to the heater.
During her life at home in Italy, the car underwent a full restoration including being repainted in her ‘bellissimo azzuro bambino’ (beautiful baby blue!). There is no rust or rot present on the car’s shell and bodywork… It may be that the floors and wheel arches have never been welded or it may be that someone took a lot of trouble to replicate the factory spot welds. The lines are lovely and straight with no real dents or dings, and only very small scratches/stone chips here and there upon close inspection, which would be easy to remedy if you so wish. The only spot of rust to mention is a very localised area on the right hand chrome quatre-light glass frame which is of no concern, and there are some very small ‘dinks’ on the front edge of the bonnet where the catch has been slammed. Both doors shut well and line up straight, and the chrome exterior trim are in good condition.
The interior is also excellent shape, including the delicate plastic door pockets which are usually prone to damage. The seats have been retrimmed in the original red and white vinyl combination, which have a showroom fresh appearance and make it a lovely bright place to sit. The new carpet, rubber over-mat and opening vinyl sun-roof are all in good shape. The KPH speedometer shows a 67,470 km reading, which we are unable to verify to be correct or not.
To sum up, this is a fantastic, well-loved motor car that is absolutely ready to be used and enjoyed at next seasons shows, going on countryside picnics or as a fantastic Christmas stocking filler!!
