A reluctant sale. I have decided to put my beloved 1962 Austin A35 van on the market, in advance of a house move to go travelling. Rather than have it laid up in a garage gathering dust, I think it is best to give it a new owner so it can be used and enjoyed.
I purchased this van, also a reluctant sale from the previous owner, in an unfinished condition in 2013 and have fully overhauled it in the intervening years.
The van was in generally in excellent structural condition when I purchased it, but was needing a large amount of mechanical work completing and some preventative medicine to nip some bubbling paintwork in the bud. I had a variety of welding jobs done, which required a full repaint rather than touch up, and I opted to put it into a unique British Railways 'Blood and Custard' scheme (I worked on the Railways).
The previous owner had fitted a reconditioned 1098cc engine and Gearbox from a Morris Minor along with uprated rear diff and front wishbones and disc brakes from an MG Midget. I have spent a lot of hours working on this van to bring it up into its current condition where I would be confident to use it as a daily driver. Work done to the vehicle includes:
- Reconditioned 1098cc Engine & Gearbox @ approx 82000 miles, fresh Castrol GTX & filter.
- MG Midget Hardened Half Shafts. New diff oil.
- New Custom Fitted Stainless Steel Exhaust System (£450).
- Refurbished SU Carb and new jet assembly.
- Refurbished Alternator.
- New Battery 2018.
- Cooling System Flushed, new coolant.
- New Thermostat, Thermostat Housing, Top Hose and a new bottom hose is in the spares box.
- Carb Vacuum Advance Gauge Fitted.
- Brake Master and Slave Cylinders Replaced with Resleeved and Machined units.
- Front Flexible Brake Hoses and Machined Brass Unions
- Brake Fluid Changed
- New Rear Drum Shoes
- Handbrake Linkage re-pinned
- New Set of 5x Tyres.
- All Five Wheels Shot Blasted, Zinc Dipped and Powder Coated.
Bodywork & Cosmetic
- Fully stripped, undersealed and rust free underneath.
- Full methodical respray into two tone Crimson & Cream
- Brand new door seal rubbers and windscreen rubber, professionally fitted.
- New carpet with sound deadening underlay fitted.
- Interior fully stripped and resprayed 2016.
I put it through an MOT to proove roadworthyness, although it is technically MOT exempt and it sailed through with no advisories. It is tax exempt and insurance is about £90 a year.
The van runs well and freely. On a 750 mile run from Norfolk to North Wales and back in 2016 the van was averaging 42mpg. Since completing the rebuild I've driven it a few hundred miles to test and shakedown everything and it is in tip top condition.
The sale also includes the a number of original parts including the factory fitted 948cc Engine, rear axle, front drums & wishbones and a box of assorted spare parts relating to the van.
Serious buyers only. The van is available to view from mid-April.
