The Vauxhall 20/60 is a four or five-seater saloon, limousine, tourer or coupé-cabriolet which began manufacture on 28 September 1927 with a six-cylinder engine and a four-speed gearbox. The initial 2.7-litre engine was enlarged to three litres after 12 months. Priced to be at the lower end of the luxury market with six cylinders, four speeds and five brakes, the better endowed 20/60 replaced the four cylinder Vauxhall 14-40. Though the new engine's capacity or swept volume was enlarged just 465cc, the vagaries of the RAC or tax formula moved its tax rating from 14HP to 20HP. Its design was completed before General Motors took control in late 1925. This wonderful car left the production line at Vauxhall in 1929 as a complete running chassis and later fitted with a Richmond body to the new owner's choice and was first registered and supplied by Woodyatt Motors of Southend-on-Sea on 26th March 1930. It is understood that the car stayed there until 1954 after which it went to Norwich and Northampton. It is believed that it was never exported and always remained in the UK. In fact, the car still holds its original registration number from 1930 and comes with its original green log book stating various past owners. It is beautifully presented and has been the subject of a major body-off restoration mostly done by Hartford Motors of Oxford in 1981. During the restoration, the chassis and running gear were completely restored and the body also restored and coach painted to the original colours; every working part has meticulously been checked, restored, reconditioned or replaced making this car a perfect usable example of this glorious make and model. Small discrete modifications have been added to make the vehicle more usable in modern traffic with the view that the new owner will want to drive it to various classic car shows around the country. It now has a usable fuel gauge, temperature gauge, isolator switch plus a Kenlow cooling fan, thermostatically controlled. The electrics have been renewed, digitalised and led bulbs fitted. All these items have been fitted discretely and are not noticeable thus making it usable in all conditions. The interior offers the perfect collaboration of elegant luxurious detailing and comes complete with the very rare and famous Vauxhall Speedbird bonnet mascot. This vehicle has had an estimated figure of over £100,000 spent over the years to get it to this fabulous and very usable condition. A separate sheet in the history file lists most of the work that has been done over the years. With very few of these cars surviving and even fewer ever being offered for sale, we hope the new owner will value the rarity of this glorious example.
